Why does the IS350 require premium and the ES350 require regular gas?
This is more just a curiosity question but they both have 11.8:1 compression ratios when I look at the 2021 IS350 vs 2020 ES350. Does anyone know why the IS requires premium? Don't they have very similar engines?

maybe the IS is tuned for more hp.
Or maybe...
EPA regulations require that the fuel recommendations for vehicles be the same as the fuel that was used for EPA emissions and fuel efficiency testing. Thus, even for many vehicles that are capable of performing excellently on regular grade 87 octane fuel, the manufacturer's recommended fuel grade may still be for premium 91 octane fuel if that was what was used for emissions and fuel efficiency testing.

The IS 350 F SPORT is geared toward performance, the ES 350 F SPORT is geared toward fuel efficiency.
IS 350 F SPORT vs ES 350
23 / 25 mpg Combined
20 / 22 mpg City
28 / 31 mpg Highway
311 / 302 HP
RWD / FWD

Not sure about that because it's the same engine. It is known if you use regular gas in the IS350 you will get lower fuel economy. This is actually a really good question, I thought the engines were different, but the IS350 and ES350 are both 2GR-FKS.
Only thing I could think of is the 2 engines are tuned differently, also the ES350 is FWD versus IS350 (which is RWD/AWD). I also believe the engine in the ES350 is the same exact type as the Camry so I'm starting to lean towards the tuning being different.

That's exactly what I said previously. Just because the share the same engine code/block doesn't mean they're exactly the same. Each engine is configured and tuned for their specific application (RX, ES, RC, Tacoma, Sienna, Avalon, Camry, etc.). Transverse vs. longitudinally mounted..and so on.
