Default How bad is this damage?

Scraped my tire on the curb with a sharp stone edge

My mechanic said they are fine cause its nowhere near the treads of the tires.
Not sure how thick these side walls are on michelin tires, should I be concerned?

Not gonna lie, that looks pretty bad.
But if you fold back the loose rubber flaps and all you see is black rubber, then you're good.
If you see white cord, then it's time for a new tire.
Michelins generally have thick sidewalls...so that's a good thing.

Yea, all I see is rubber if I lift up the rubber flap from the tire, no cords. I was thinking about using the rubber glue for filling holes in tires to glue down the flaps of rubber I have hanging right now to make it look better.

I wouldn't say it HAS to be changed, but I would.

I had something similar, tbh, some ppl on the forum might hate me for saying this, I put super glue and put tape over it, the next day, I removed the tape and I've been driving on the tire for 10K+ miles and the super glue hasn't let up. I don't think you need to pay $200 for some minor sidewall damage.

I don't mind how it looks, more worry about the safety of driving on them. I have less than 2k miles on them, they're kinda new.

To be honest, I'd change it out just to be safe. Like others said as long as the chords aren't showing you should be fine. BUT I don't like chancing stuff like that especially when it comes to safety of me or passengers.

A good rim guy should be able to handle that without much issue. I would definitely replace the tire though. I ran into very similar situation on my last car...Long story short ~4-5K miles after the initial damage the tire blew out on a pot hole and I broke my back changing it, with my dinner I just picked up getting cold ....

Even if it's okay, I would still replace it. And less importantly, the aesthetic factor would really bother me. I would just feel uncomfortable with that.

on top of what everyone else said. . .
i would just keep an eye on your psi . . . maybe fill your tire with that instant flat stuff ...
and yes, like you said, use some insane adhesive to keep flaps down.

if you do change tire, i would wait until you can replace at least 2 at once.

If you have a road hazard warranty on those tires, you could get it mostly paid for by the warranty. I've had something similar happen, and I only had to pay about half the cost due to how much tread I had left. Something to think about.

If the side wall starts to bulge out as if a golf ball was sticking out of it I would definitely replace it. If there is no bulge appearing from the damage you should be ok.
