Leaky Sunroof
Hello all,
New here and glad to be apart of the family. I have decent mechanical knowledge and have worked on some of my own vehicles in the past. Onto the good stuff..
I own a 2014 is250 which recently started leaking from the back of the sunroof. Its not bad just a bit of water coming through doesnt pool in the drip tray but does leave an unpleasant smell if not driven and aired out.
The stealership initially told me since car was cpo everything would be coverwd under warranty. Now they are telling me its not. They also advised that the cabels to the sunroof have caused the problem as there is "slack in the cables". I think its all bull****.
Cpo initially refused the claim and after having called then they will cover the wiring since its electrical but wont cover the gasket install ($599 parts and labor)
I have done some research here and have seen that the part has been upgraded from ending digits 60 to 61 though the new part seems to sometimes not fit. The total repair would have been $2800 but is now $599. I can definitely do this myself but i fear that I will either not get the seal to fit snug or it will need constant adjustment.
Any thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated. 1 love.

Yeah you likely found my posts about this.
Mine wasn't leaking, that I was aware of, but causes a rattle which I tolerate probably less than a leak lol.
$600 is robbery, you can do it yourself i promise. I had to do it a few times as you may have read my nightmare. Changing out for the new part , which definitely did not fit, and it started to rain lol (I pulled the car inside a warehouse).
If it were me obviously I'd buy the older version. But someone did apparently get the newer version to fit. In my case there was no way ever it was going to fit. I have a 2014 as well.
Its 4 screws to take out the sunroof. You can do it by just removing 2 of them also if you prefer. Mark where the screws were and take your time. Its easy enough to position the sunroof as you tighten it down into place either way. There is also a front and back to the weather strip, so just put the new one on the same way. Easy peasy.

Homer,
I seriously appreciate your reply here. I also believe it was your thread where i saw the new part not fitting. I also kind of figured lexus was trying to one up me and the cpo program to make more money. This same stealership told me i needed to replace mt coolant lines when they were perfectly fine.
Seems south Florida lexus dealerships are not what they once used to be.
In regards to the gasket. Did it slip on or need to be glued down? Lexus also stated i had slack in the cable lines which led up to the sun roof. Cpo will cover that fix of $1800 but should i even let them do that? How can they tell theres cable slack when they cant even see the cable?
Kind Regards,
Jay

Slack in the drain lines? Idk but if they work they work right. Then again if they think there's something to fix and its no cost to you then maybe. If it were me it would depend on whether it works or not, and how much has to be taken apart to do the fix. I dont want my car disassembled anywhere if it doesn't need to be.
Car sales are down so they're desperate for service $$$
the strip just slips on no glue.

Yea they would have to drop the headliner and im assuming it wouldnt be 100% after the fix. Yes thw sunroof works flawlessly. Besides the tiny bit of water that gets through, there are no issues. I could probably live with the leak. Also, I looked over your post and noticed you stated you also had a little water coming in. Did that stop? Or is this one of those quirks of our cars? Probably going to take the car to another reputable dealership in Orlando once im able to make the trip. At least i know they have my best interest in mind when they provided me a comped oil change when they misplaced my car for 20 minutes. Down here ive had wrong tires put on my car, horrible cpo experience and getting curve ***** thrown at me left and right. Love the car regardless.

Update. I called a lexus dealer in central florida where i also have my car serviced. They quoted me around $260 wirh parts labor and install. Probably going to have it done there so its warrantied.
Question. Do you think its wortwhile to have the current dealership match the other? Or just take the car to what seems to be the more honest dealership? I also have a free oil change at the central florida dealer so thinking of just waiting 3 weeks when we go up.

The dealer in central Florida which i havnt had issues with is lexus of orlando. They are the ones who quoted me fairly. They also comped me an oil change.
Huge update. After speaking to another service manager at the southern dealership (pembroke pines) i played dumb and asked for the break down. I got a much cheaper result being 169.99/hr labor, part 92.00 and labor 0.5-1hr. Total being around $250. Requested to talk to a service manager to explain the ordeal and how i was originally quoted 599.99 and was told "oh we went with the maximum allotted time" what a crock of ****. Ive never had issues with their work. I figure i get the job done and never return back there.
They also tried to play the cpo program big time and got me involved as well. No way my sun roof cables have "slack" either they work or they dont work. They are cables! Im thinking about somehow reporting them but i know corporate doesnt do **** as ive has and tried to report another dealer which screwed up and put two sets of wrong tires on my car. I cant make this sht up... I wish i could at this point

I wonder if the sunroof drain tubes are clogged? Might be something to check. If they are, the water wouldn't have anywhere to go but into the cabin.
That sounds like typical dealership stuff. I have only had my VW a few months and have already had the same thing happen. "Oh, yeah I am pretty sure the CPO warranty will cover that." Yeah, right. "Oh, sorry sir, that's a wear item, so it's not covered." :
The stealership initially told me since car was cpo everything would be coverwd under warranty. Now they are telling me its not. They also advised that the cabels to the sunroof have caused the problem as there is "slack in the cables". I think its all bull****.
The sunroof drains are not clogged. I tested them out by pouring water in them and they work no problems. The problem is really just the small amount of water which sits between the gasket and the actual roof because of a loose fit and its not enough water to funnel down. It's less than a bottle caps worth of water basically will just coat the bottom (inside back portion) of the weather stripping until it drys out. In such the water will end up evaporating in the car leaving a slightly unpleasant smell.
In all, even though the dealer said the cables have slack it was just a way for them to make more money. I just want the weather stripping replaced. Waiting for the repair quote on paper sent to my email and will have them complete the gasket replacement. I am not letting them drop my headliner and replace a cable even if its free of charge because i know it doesnt need to be done. And here i thought lexus wouldve been the better option in regards to customer service, i guess this goes across the board will all car brands/dealerships.

Final update. Picked up my car today (was in central florida for work for 3 weeks). And woahhhh did they play the cpo program.
Even though i asked to just replace the gasket they did the entire job. Cpo covered $1600 my cost was $175 for the gasket install and labor. I got a discount from $260 due to the "inconvenience" they caused.
I was pissed, asked to inspect the car first before paying. Noticed the ***** handles are a little loose but i dont use them and can torque down the torx screws if need be.
The job is was done properly on the sunroof. No leaks at all not even a small drop of water and it was raining after i picked the car up
In all, will never go back to lexus of pembroke pines or any south florida lexus dealers. Will now solely go to lexus of orlando.
Thank you to all who responded. Hopefully this thread will help others. I may have done this myself. The part was replaced with part ending in 61.
Kind Regards,
Jay
