Default Main screen is blank when hooked up to usb

Whenever I connect my phone via usb and play music (from Spotify for instance), the little screen above the steering wheel shows the artist and song info ... but my main screen doesnt show any of that... which I find weird. Is it something with my settings or is this expected behavior?

I have a 2016 non-nav.

Have you tried it over Bluetooth to see what happens?

Do you have any songs loaded onto your iPhone locally i.e. through Apple Music/iTunes? Some users have stated that you need at least 1 song on your local library for the car to recognize your phone properly when connected by USB.
