I need an oil change and I'm wondering if I really should have Lexus do it and spend the $100 or have a local shop do it. I know our cars get oil change once a year so Im thinking its gonna need some really good 0-20 synthetic...not that cheap mobil 1 that seems to evaporate quickly(thats what it always did in other cars I've had). And also a very good oil filter.
I called a local shop and was quoted $65 and he said yes its 0-20 synthetic, I didnt ask brand of oil, but I did ask brand of filter and he said they use carquest filters...I have no idea if those are decent or not.
I dont have the means to do it myself or I would. When I did I used royal purple and a purolitor filter.
What do you all recommend? I'll pay the extra money for peace of mind and certainty that the oil will last the year, just was curious if it really mattered.
Definitely make sure it’s an SN Plus certified oil (prevents LSPI) and if I’m being totally honest with you, I don’t trust any oil changing places. Either do it yourself or get a trusted independent mechanic and bring your own oil and filter. The Mobil 1 Annual performance filter is really good.

Thanks bro! I figured with these highly efficient turbo engines I shouldn't take any risks, especially seeing as how I'll be installing the jb4 stage 2 next weekend.
A lot of people are saying the Amazon motor oil is actually pretty good and I think it's thinner than Mobil1(slightly and it's SN Plus). Also to add, make sure it's ILSAC GF5 motor oil as well.

Not too sure how true that is but it makes sense these days.
All mainstream oils today meet ILSAC GF5 standards. SN Plus came out to put a bandaid on the LSPI issue until the industry agreed on the new ILSAC GF-6 standard which addresses LSPI and other little things. ILSAC GF-6 will be put into practice around May of 2020.
1) do not go to the stealership.. sometimes they don't even use toyota engine oil and use another brand (pennzoil) which is fine but not worth $100
2) get mobil 1 synthetic oil
3) buy lexus oem oil filter from amazon
4) => mechanic

There's another thread about this, but I don't see an issue with Pennzoil, particularly Platinum, since that's what Ferrari has as their factory fill... Ultimately just make sure the oil is the right viscosity and is SN certified.

Any oil brand is fine for street use. Particularly today. I'm an oil snob and even I'm using Amazon 0-20 now. The important thing is using oil that meets spec.
And no there's no issue with Pennzoil. In fact, it's superior to Toyota if you're counting. But they're all within spitting distance of eachother, it's not worth mentioning.
This whole BUT TOYOTA OIL! is nonsense. Most dealers don't even use Toyota oil. Toyota doesn't make oil. No car manufacturer makes their own oil, despite the logo on the bottle. They contract out. Same w/ coolants and any other "factory" fluids. If they use it, great. If they use something else, it's great too.
It's more important that you change your oil and filter on time and that the job is done right. For that, i recommend nobody else but yourself to do it.
any modern motor oil nowadays would work excellent. our engines aren't high revving or high performance. designed to putz around town comfortably and go 200k+

The caveat to this is that the turbo charged 4 banger could be prone to LSPI so if you want to be absolutely sure you're protecting against that, get a SN Plus certified oil. ILSAC GF-6 will address LSPI directly starting next year.

Rave reviews pretty much all over the web. This includes blackstone reports and there's some good youtube videos on it where it even out performs the name brand synthetics. i think it even beats mobil 1 when compared directly.
again not enough to make any real difference in real life, but a difference nonetheless. too many people jerk to oil brands as of its sports or religion. really, for street use, it's all the same in terms of actual results.
changing it is more important than the brand you use.
As for me, i notice no difference from my last change which was done with Castrol Magnatec (another great oil, just $3 more per 5 QTs)

I was waiting for the Blackstone reports. I'll probably go with Amazon oil next as well. No reason not to since it has SN Plus certification.
Yeah. As long as it meets spec and maintains viscosity and shear resistance at temp, and has good detergent properties, I see no reason not to use it. Blackstone would tell you if something is wrong. Conversely, there's also little reason to not go with Castrol at a few more bucks a bottle, but a few bucks can pay for your oil filter.
Do they have Amazon in germany? how does that work over there?
