Default Temperature gauge

Hi guys,

I was wondering this morning after a long spirited drive.

My temp gauges shows "C" at the bottom and "H" at the top. (I assume most ISxxx are)

The highest point my needle has shown is marginally towards "H" from dead centre.

Can anyone enlighten me what will make the needle move towards "H". Would the oil temp be around 130C or 266F?

Thanks!

Under normal operating conditions, the needle should always stay about the middle.
You never want it to move to H as that means the vehicle is overheating (i.e. thermostat stuck closed, sufficient coolant has leaked out, rad fan inoperative, etc.)
The temp gauge is based on Coolant temp only...oil is measured as pressure, not temp.
I'm sure there is a correlation between oil and coolant temp, but for the purpose of the gauges it's two different types of measurements.

a stuck/broken thermostat can cause the needle to move, make sure you have coolant in the reservoir & be careful if somethings wrong, and it is actually overheating you can damage the engine

Thanks for the replies.

I think I may have been unclear. I wanted to know, if the needles rises towards the "H" mark, what would the engine temperature be?

Just a curiosity.

Thanks guys!
