AA81E lag when shifting from 2nd to 3rd
Hi All,
On my '15 F Sport I've experiencing a 2-3sec lag when shifting from 2nd to 3rd in manual mode.
This happens when changing from 2nd to 3rd at very light / light, constant throttle between 2000-2500 RPM.
It feels like the 3rd gear is engaging rather slow: if I depress the accelerator during the lag between 2nd and 3rd
the engine RPM increases without accelerating the car, just like in neutral.
When traffic conditions allow heavier accelerations, the shift time (from 2nd to 3rd) feels OK.
The mileage is relatively low for the car's age: it has 18k miles in it. It was a dealership test/demo car,
and I think it may have been abused by car journalists, since the front brake pads were almost fully worn @ 15k miles.
Also noticed that downshifting from 7th to 6th is often harsh, even with light or fully released throttle.
Did someone had similar experience?
Is is possible to fix this issue by performing a re-adaptation procedure of the transmission control unit?
Or shall the valve body needs to be removed and inspected for clogged solenoids?
(e.g. caused by metal particles due to excessive wear of the transmission mechanism)

Ok my 2nd to 3rd can or 3rd to 2nd can lag from time to time. Sometimes really fast though. Varies almost as though car has moods.
However, never do the rpms raise in between gears as you described. I 2nd, start with some new fluids .

I also have issues with shifting from 2nd to 3rd while in manual mode... when I shift between 2k and 3k rpms, the transmission seems to lag for a second and then engage harder than other gears. Are you on the 8-spd transmission?
What about higher speeds? Quick right shifting right?
...except downshift from 7th to 6th. That's often harsh compared to the other gear changes.
It's a bit strange for me since changing from 6th to 7th is flawless.
Yes, it's an 8-speed trans.

I just dropped my car off to get this checked out and for uneven boosting (200t issue). The last time I had dropped it off, they found my knock correct learn value to be low and that it could be causing the harsh shifting. I’ve since switched from Costco to Chevron gas, so it will be interesting to see what they find

So I got a crappy wiress OBD2 reader and OBD Fusion app which I bought Lexus pkg for. Where did you get techstream and now much $?
I have yet to test, but found the link from another thread on this site.
I've heard that the 2017-2018 models with the same AA81E are equipped with improved/quicker shifting program (compared to the earlier 3rd gen ISs).
Could someone confirm this?
Is the improved shifting time valid to the manual mode as well?
...and is it possible to upgrade the existing "lazy" shifting program with a more recent one?

I wish they would release an ECU/TCU reflash for the pre-2017/2018 to match the newer models.
