Default Climate Control groaning noise

Has anyone encountered this issue with their climate control where adjusting the temperature between hot -> cold, and cold -> hot makes a groaning noise? It's very intermittent, and seems to happen more frequently on cold starts. Sometimes it even makes that groan noise with the climate control off. After driving a bit, or the car has warmed up, it goes away.

I've taken to the 2 different Lexus dealers, but they've been unable to pinpoint what is causing that sound.

Here is a video

Any suggestions?

Mine does it on occasion. I think it's the servo motor.

Sounds a little 'gassy' to me. Lol. Ok, ok. Could not resist. Lol

Mine is much softer in sound. Not loud and farty sounding like in the video. Maybe a servo or something caught on a flap in there when it's opening / closing.

lol, there have been a few times my passengers thought someone farted in the car. I don't know if it is worth chasing this issue any further as others have a similar problem

i brought my 2015 350 to 2 dealerships for sane noise, well mines considerably quieter yours is quite loud... and they said it’s normal. Mines more of a very quit quick grind or click sound, barely audible you have to turn radio and hvac off... yours is *********** I think it’s called servo or blend motor or something like that. Maybe you just need a good cleaning somewhere, there’s lots of DIY on it if you’re out of warranty.

Before I read the Tech Tip I was going to say it sounds like the servo/blend door for the heat when the temp is adjusted...which is pretty much what the Tip is saying that is causing the noise.

No, my evaporator core was never replaced. I purchased the car new, and the noise started occurring between 5k and 10k miles. It's been making this noise since then, I'm at 45k miles now. I'm planning to take it back to the dealer again and have them look at it once more. If they are unable to fix it, then I'll probably decide to just live with it.

Is the servo/blend door easily accessible and replaceable? I tried researching some videos or pictures for instructions, but didn't come across any for my model.

I would take the video to them and reference the Tech Tip...pretty hard for them to dodge that.
Plus they'll know when they replace it to take out the extra packing pad.
I see it as a win win all around.

Some servos are somewhat easy to replace, but the doors are inside the box.
Only way to access them is to take the entire box out...which means taking the entire dash out.

Yep, you will have to remove the head unit to access the blend door servo.

It could be that they never removed the plastic when they did the install, and only after 5-10k miles did it start to wear and become a problem.

Hey guys, want to follow up on this one.

I took my car to Lexus Dealer, and of course my car decides to be shy. So I left it with them for a week, and just got it back today. I haven't heard the noise today, and the repair was covered under the basic warranty

Here is the note for the invoice

CONFIRMED NOISE WHEN SWITCHING TEMPERATURE. FOUND NOISE COMING FROM SERVO MOTOR. CONFIRMED
NOISE WHEN SWITCHING TEMPERATURE. FOUND NOISE COMING FROM SERVO MOTORS AREA. INSTALLED MODE DOOR SERVO BUT
NOISE DID NOT GO AWAY. INSTALLED DRIVER SIDE TEMP MODE SERVO MOTOR AND OPERATED TEMP INDIVIDUALLY. DRIVER SIDE
NOISE IS QUIET BUT PASSENGER SIDE IS STILL MAKING NOISE. INSTALLED PASSENGER SIDE TEMP MODE SERVO MOTOR BUT
NOISE IS STILL PRESENT. NOISE IS COMING FROM MECHANICAL DOOR INSIDE EVAPORATOR BOX. REMOVED DASHBOARD AND
REPLACED EVAPORATOR BOX ASSEMBLY. NOISE IS NO LONGER PRESENT. RECHARGED A/C SYSTEM AND BLED COOLING SYSTEM.
OKAY NOW.
Fingers crossed that it doesn't come back

Looks like it was due to the evaporator box... I wonder if it was left-on plastic that was causing it.

Yeah, it does look like it. I've never had the evaporator box replaced until today. Wonder if they forgot to remove it during the car manufacturing process
