Default are backup cameras swappable?

Just curious if it's possible to swap out the physical backup camera with an aftermarket one that can provide the lines?

Which backup camera do you have now? I thought all the IS cameras had lines, and mine certainly does. Are you not able to turn that setting on?

It should be a software setting, not hardware.

the 14's don't come w/ lines. Not planning on doing anything to the IS, but just curious to do it on older vehicles to get a better / clearer image. I know the display also impacts the display but camera on my 07 RX could definitely be better.

The 14's do have lines. I think you mean the lines that move side to side when the steering wheel turns.

Those lines that move are CANBUS driven.
There is twisted pair of canbus wires going to the factory camera. Even on the stationary lines on the 2014 there is CANBUS wires on it so it may be possible that all you need to do is swap to newer camera with the moving lines since the chance is high the camera is generating those lines.

You can use anything for the camera. My 2015 canadian IS didn't come with a backup camera, but the plug was in the trunk, so I bought an eBay camera and it works like a charm.

The 2014 with stationary lines is because the plug is 4 wires without the "left and right" inputs. 2015+ have 6 wires so the camera "knows" when the car is turning.

The lines are actually controlled by the camera.
