I had something like this on mine, was about $110 or so to fix at Safelite. I think I could have done better on the price. I just did it for peace of mind.

 

i had to replace mine recently...big crack. whatever you do don't call your insurance company. just pay for it our of pocket ($250). if you call your insurance they'll put it down as you filling a claim.

 

I did a few on my wrx and they were barely visible, but it all depends on the size of chip. The pit glaze is used to smooth out the surface and also to get rid of the cloudy appearance, at least most of it. I picked up both on ebay for about $30.

 

With this kind of chip with no crack i don't need to use resin. I use a pit filler but to answer your question, yes it does leave a little cloudy spot. I have a glass compound to try and get it almost clear again. On the one i did on my car i can't see it unless i try to look for it.

Where I live shops are able to repair stone chips & ''spider web'' cracks that are under the size of a quarter. Most of the chips / cracks disappears after the repair, but you'll still see a small spot. It's not cloudy at all (well, for me it wasn't, but perhaps it will for you since the damage looks superficial).

You can also buy a DIY kit at Walmart... Does the same job, if done properly (tried it).

 

The glass on these windshields do seem to be problematic and VERY expensive from the factory. Mine spread from a very small rock chip to cracks in 24hrs. I've replaced mine with new glass from safelite and thankfully haven't had problems since. I'd say call your insurance co to get it filled with resin but if it starts cracking just abandon for aftermarket....don't pay for the Lexus glass.

 

Sometimes these can be filled in...I had a knick from a truck after it rained (CA freeways are notoriously filled with rocks after it rains), guy was able to fill it in and polish it out for $30. It's mostly to prevent the chip spreading to a full blown crack. These AGC windshields seem soft like Pilkington windshields. So easily cracked... Saint Gobain Sekurit seems to be the strongest windshield glass.

 

I wonder if it's policy dependent, or based on the state you live in? I live in CA and my windshield is being replaced as I type this. I filed a claim with State Farm ($250 deductible) and it will not affect my insurance premium. I made certain of this before moving forward with the claim. With my policy, it falls under "comprehensive" coverage. I chose to file the claim because I wanted OEM glass.
