My previous car had OEM color matched splash guards and I always liked having the protection. As we all know, the IS doesn't come with (or have color matched option) splash guards. When I purchased my car almost 4 years ago I got the only ppf protection for behind the rear tires that I could find online and installed it myself.
Today we did the 'ole end of summer wash, clar bar, polish, etc... treatment and I removed the original and installed new and improved ppf behind the rear tires. The old ppf had yellowed a lot, but was never noticeable since my car is dark. What I love about this option is that it is cheap and easy to remove and replace if needed.
Just wanted to let folks know that there are alternatives to actual splash guards if they are interested.
old yeller
I removed mine completely first day I had the car. one year later paint is still pristine.
I doubt after almost four years that my paint would still be pristine if unprotected. I choose not to take the chance.
I wish that I'd had more wrapped when I did the front end.

It really depends on the area you live in. Where I live, if you don't use splash guards, you won't have any paint left on the back wheel areas after one winter. We even get rock chips on doors and roof from all the gravel they put down during winter. I actually had 80% of my car wrapped in film, as long as the installer do a good job and wrap around all the edges, you will never be able to tell it was filmed.
^true it could be where you live. I've had my BMW for 9 years, lowered, wide tires, spacers, did ton of canyon carving, autocross. Paint behind wheels pristine!
I have a set of aftermarket mud flaps, and are getting them painted by my body shop to my colour to match, and then installing. Will post pics when completed. I too am a fan of mud flaps.
