Default 2018 IS horsepower and name change?

Motor Trend is claiming 5 more hp for the IS350. Hadn't heard anything over here about increased power. Also the 200t name will now be the 300. Where would that leave the current V6 IS300? Hadn't heard of a name change other than on the NX. Confirm?

The GS350 has the same engine as the IS350 and has had that +5 HP increase for a couple years now. If they are replacing the 300 with the 200t, then it's probably because they finally hooked it up to the AWD powertrain. I suspect they couldn't get it working well together in time, which is why they just offered a detuned 350 as the base AWD offering. All-in-all, I don't think 2018 will be a significant upgrade; there will just be some minor improvements here or there.

It's odd MT wouldn't mention the existing IS300 V6 was being discontinued- if that's the case. I wouldn't put a huge amount of trust in MT, but they did have some IS updates last year that no one else mentioned here, and ended up being true. Interesting.

I posted about this in the 2018 IS thread.

The IS200t becomes the IS300 RWD. No changes to it other than a name change.

The current IS300 AWD continues on with a V6, but in both this model and the IS350 the 2GR-FSE is being replaced by the 2GR-FKS, like the GS did in 2016. This engine change results in a 5hp increase for both the IS300 AWD and the IS350.

The 2GR-FKS is basically the same engine but can switch to the Atkinson cycle under low loads for efficiency.

The 2GR-FKS is used in the RC350 (for 2018), the RC300 AWD, the Tacoma, 2018 Camry, the RX, the Sienna and the Highlander.

The GS200t was also renamed and is now the GS300. The NX200t also becomes the NX300.

I never really liked the sound of "IS 200t"... Even so, looks like Lexus is fully on-board with the type of nonsensical naming used by the Germans. Should have realized after the LS 500 was announced, but LS 350t just seems odd.

I wonder where the 5 HP come from...?

Like the LC500 and LC500h. The h really should have been named LC350 or LC350h, IMO.

Its not really a RENAME right?

Cause if you're naming the IS200t to IS300t (gotta add a T cuz TURBOOOOOOOOO).. You're telling the world you got a 3.0 liter Turbo (most likely V6) in that car lol.

But really though, I'm assuming they will just drop the IS300. And have AWD options for both is200t and is350.

Note: Lexus is usually do their numbering/names corresponding to the displacement in their car. Ex. IS350 (3.5 liter), GX460 (4.6 liter), LS500 (5.0 liter). It would be odd to name the IS200t to IS300, as it does not have a 3.0 liter displacement. UNLESS, they do give it a 3.0 liter displacement, but with a 4-banger turbo?

Lexus abandoned the nomenclature = displacement already. First with the 3.5 liter IS300 AWD. The LS500 does not use a 5 liter V8, it uses a 3.5 liter turbo V6.

Now all "200t" models become "300".

They probably want to gear up with Mercedes and BMW marketing wise because they have 330i and C300. IS200 sounds measeley compared and people will have psychological issues cross-shopping. Just how this stuff works. Needs a 3 in the name for the entry level.

Next gen IS will probably see IS400.

370z will likely become Nissan 400z. If they run the 2.0T, they may call that model the 300z.

Using Mercedes engines in both.

Time to ramp up and create a whole new naming scheme for cars. All the cars you know and love are completely changing.

Just call it IS AWD. Unless they just give the 300 the 2.0T w/AWD and drop the neutered 350 engine.

TBH, I'd kinda hate that if I couldn't afford a 350 but needed AWD. The 300 AWD is probably more fun to drive, since it has no turbo lag and posts better acceleration times compared to the 200t. I'd imagine an AWD model with the 2-liter engine would be even slower due to the extra weight of the AWD transfer case, etc. It would get better fuel economy, but less than the RWD model. Not a great compromise unless they can get more power into that engine.

The "neutered" engine is still quite good in my experience. You can kinda tell it's limited in the top 1500 or so revs, but only if you are looking for it. It will still give you a good feeling of acceleration and sound good in the process.

Wouldn't be surprised, though, if they can get the 2.0t engine into the AWD model for the next-gen IS. Hopefully the engine and transmission will be improved over the current ones if they do that.

Where is your 2018 IS thread? I searched here and on the general car board before posting here and nothing came up. Thanks.

5 HP is nothing, you can get that from a change in the intake, exhaust, or any number of other tweaks. The IS350 should have 320-333 min hp like their German counterparts.

In Canada at least, 2018 model IS will finally see memory seats and clearance/back up sensors added to FSport Series 2 model for both 300 and 350.
