Default 2014 is250 reliability

Coming from a euro car (03 20th gti) I really want my next car to be reliable and not having to worry about it breaking down. A new job requires me to drive everyday, I plan on buying a 2014 IS250 Fsport for 25k ish with 30-45k miles. I really like the Lexes and I'm either picking up the is250 for a CPO 2016 Gti. Can anyone tell me about the long term reliability of the 2014 is250 f sport(till about 100k)? I most likely will not be able to get it CPO because of my budget. Thank you for the help and your time!

I currently own an IS250 not an F-Sport, and have no complaints with 44K miles. I commute 60 miles everyday, average 22-23MPG and perform oil changes every 7K miles, aside from that, routine maintenance is all that is required.

Being a Toyota/Lexus, you shouldn't have any issues. My understanding is that it is the same engine from the previous generation but with some newer parts

Thanks for the response, this eases my mind in buying a 30-40k mile Lexus.

As for the 2014 IS 250, the car ranks well for reliability and dependability as well:

Google is your friend here as a search for "reliability of 2014 Lexus IS 250" will yield many informative results.

Make sure to differentiate preference ratings from dependability, as CR did not recommend this model for this year but this had nothing to do with the reliability, more for preferences like MPG rating and taste related issues like seating space, lack of power, interior layout, etc.

Good luck.
Thanks! I did search a bunch but most results were from 2015. Now 2 years later I wanted to make sure again before buying the car. Thank you for the links as well, I appreciate it!

Keep in mind the 2.5L has issues with carbon build-up due to direct injection. The 3.5L has proven more reliable because it has both direct and port injection and its not that much worse on the gas. If you can swing it, the 3.5L is MUCH MUCH better.

Im pretty satisfied with mine at 20k miles. No issues so far!
I had two choices either is250 or is200t since I was in the middle of the refresh date.
It was either is250 grandfather engine with chance of carbon build up or is200t new engine lineup with possible initial issues.
In the end, I am happy with the is250 due to the throaty v6 sound rather than the is200t 4cyl honda civic sound.

I was in a budget also, so I was not able to consider the is350 at the time. BUT now if I had to redo my decision it would be IS350!

If you scroll down to the bottom, you'll see the IS250 on the top list of reliable cars. I have a friend in the market to replace a 2IS with a '14 IS250, probably looking one with the same mileage as you are unless she decides to lease new. There are issues with carbon build up on 2IS cars with the same engine, but time will tell on 3ISs. However, the IS250 still made that list.

BTW, just because you have/are considering a GTI and not just a regular Golf, I'd highly suggest looking into a 350 for the bigger motor and brakes.

If I considered a 350 it would have to be non f sport and I just love the bumper and seats of the f sport.

The reality is that carbon buildup can be an issue for any direct injection gasoline engine.
Lexus did develop a fix for the 2IS near the end of the model life, so those corrections should have been incorporated into the 3IS.
So...the 3IS 250 should be ok...and I say should cause my crystal ball is broken, so who knows what the future holds.

now I'm getting a little scared of this carbon buildup. I heard "I redline a day keeps the carbon away" and with every oil change adding carbon cleanup into the gas may help. Along with a catch can. With these I'm hoping I can stay away from Carbon buildup but I have to do more research on it. Kinda scaring me away now

I wouldn't worry...it was really a 2IS issue and it didn't even affect every vehicle.
Vehicle usage was a contributing factor as well...can't blame the car altogether.

They fixed the carbon buildup on IS250 engine since 2012 IS250 model, 2006-2011 model uses 5-30W engine oil, 2012+ and up uses 0-20W, put an Oil Catch can in there and use only premium fuel and fuel injector once awhile, replace your PCV valve every 40k,

PCV valve is cheap, thanks for the reminder. I'm going to pick up one later this week as having a new one will only help.
