the switch that's included has an aux tap (presumably for the led indicator light) that i did not tap when testing. does the switch need to be "powered" for the circuit to be completed?

Bulbs, make sure the bulbs you're using work. Try placing them into another socket (one you know works) to make sure they are working.
Once confirmed your bulbs are working, make sure you have power to your socket. Use a voltmeter to assess if power is being delivered to socket. (Please make sure you know how to do this before proceeding so you can do this safely.)

If bulbs are good and power is going to sockets, then you''ll need to defer to someone with more knowledge than I have, but it's a start. Good luck.
Going off of this, I always test any bulb or lighting application i'm going to install. Sometimes you get dud bulbs that are just dead on arrival. It's exciting installing some new lights, but it really sucks when you're nearing completion only to find out that the bulb is dead. Testing takes a few minutes max and will save you lots of potential wall punching in the event of DOA. Better safe than sorry!
