Default Oil Changes

Hi Guys, the dealer who sold me my 250 told me the oil needed to be changed every 10k miles. I thought this was pretty high. Is this accurate? Also, if I do decide not to go to the dealer for a change and provide my own oil is there a specific brand / type thats best for our cars?

10k is indeed the current Lexus recommendation, on full synthetic.

I just leased the IS350 and they told me they expect the oil to be changed every 5k. To me, this seems slightly excessive for synthetic oil, but perhaps you could go somewhere in the middle range... every 7k?

It varies by region. Lexus Canada recommends every 8000 km (5000 miles). I would say the driving conditions in southern Canada and northern US are pretty similar and our oils follow the same specifications. Another member here said the recommended interval in Russia is 10000 km.

For a synthetic oil it is actually a fairly conservative interval, in BMW they change it every 15K miles. I read some studies that argued synthetic oil can easily go 18-20 K miles (in normal driving).

Toyota/Lexus have changed the interval to 16,000km (10,000 miles) for most 2016 models now as well.

BMW changed it to 10k because apparently they had issues or something

I doubt it, though I own 2 BMWs both older than 10 years I doubt for the simple reason that my BMW dealer would notify me during maintenance or oil changes that I should no longer pay attention to service lights and come for oil change every 10k miles instead, I never heard anything like that. Also most likely there would be some company-wide bulletin of some sort, perhaps written notice to owners (I am in their database), etc, - nothing of the sort.

I've been using Mobil 1 since I learned how to drive and my intervals have been 10k to 1 year. I've never blown an engine or had any problems. 10k is fine I've gone 15k on Mobil 1 when I stuck a tester into the oil it came in at 50% of a new bottle. If you're comfortable with that don't waste your money on 5k oil changes.

I had an oil analysis done on Mobil 1 Extended full synthetic10/30 at 11K miles and the analysis indicated the oil could have easily gone another 2K. But, we live in southern California - I'm sticking to 10K. Run same schedule on our other Toyota products, except the Corolla which is used primarily on short runs - doing a 5K schedule on it with full synthetic.

There is nothing to doubt, all BMWs from 2013/2014 or later are switched to 10k intervals now.
15k intervals, lifetime fluids is all just marketing BS. They don't care if your car lasts past 100k miles or not, in fact it's better for them if it starts falling apart.

And I am not saying your engine will explode if you change oil every 15k miles, but they do think that 15k is too long now for whatever reason. And obviously not going to run around and tell all previous owners that they've been doing it wrong for past 10-15 years

PS. Alot of dealers did recommend changing oil every 7.5k when BMW introduced those long 15k intervals. I did that myself.

Just stick to 10k recommended interval. It's not like you will be racing your IS. I'm 7k in on my current oil and the oil looks good.
