Has anyone changed their brake pads?
I was at the dealership and they quoted me for $400

Just wanted to know if they do anything special to the pads or just replace them. I did ask for an itemized quote and it seems they only replace the pads, and flush if needed.
I looked at my vehicles system, and there is no information populated on the vehicle information screen. On the Oil/Filter it says 10,000 miles and it's documented.

What are the recommendations in terms of replacing brake pads, anyone in the SJ/Sunnyvale/Milpitas area recommend me anything? Maybe I can just go to another location and have the do it for half the price but a better job.

brake pads are ridiculously easy on the IS. I can do the fronts in under 30 minutes taking my time. So are your pads wear indicators going thin? Theres no really any mileage where you have to change out pads.

those are instructions for 2IS rear but its very similar what you have to do.

But unfortunately, my gf doesn't want me to do car repairs on my own, she is very paranoid about me getting injured.

Do you have a shop you can recommend me if my friend is unable to help me change my brakes next weekend? I did already purchase the brake pads for about 50 bucks on Sewell.

 

where do you live? if you're in so cal i'll change them for you for free. its beyond easy and you'll save over 75%. it'll take me 10 mins per tire.

 

There are a lot of car shops in east bay. Just go yelp and look for some. Easy peasy. If you have time purchase these pads from Sewell

Then go to any indy shop and they will change your pads and resurface the current rotors for around $100 total.

Oh wow you're awesome! But unfortunately I'm in NorCal. I do travel to Irvine for work on occasions.

wait, $100 is if you bring the pads yourself. If you purchase the pads from them so it will be extra.

Bleeding is part of car ownership.

 

There are plenty of shops that can help you out with this. To change the pads on 3IS is incredibly easy. Don't need to take out the calipers just loosen them up, take the pads out and put new pads in and tighten everything back. Very easy. I even think to pay $100 for pads is overkill but they do the rotor resurface and it is like $30 each per rotor I think.

Be ready to change your rotors as well. I logged in 16k miles on my vehicle in about 9 months of mostly driving to work roundtrip--half suburbia, half city, and visited friends and family on weekends, highway and suburbia mileage. i have a pretty light foot and am pretty conscience about effing up my brakes and rotors too quickly. still, my were worn down on the inner part, first .75 inch was compressed in much more than the outter ring of the disc. At the time i was studying for my IT certification so i didn't have time. took it to an well known local indy shop and they performed the brake and rotor swap, and 15k maintenance check--total cost was $600. sucks i had to pay that much but was wayyyy better than the stealership's $1200.

 

also, for those who swapped out their F sport brakes for the non-F sport brakes.. i need an explanation here.. the indy shop mechanic told me that the reason why the F Sport has more brake dust is because in theory, the brakes are softer and the rotors are harder. less brake dust would be the opposite, so harder pads, softer rotor. but if my softer F Sport brakes wore down my rotors at 16k miles of 20% highway, 40% suburban, 40% of city driving, and if i switch to the non-F Sport brakes, which yield less brake fade because of the stiffer pad, will i kill my rotors in even faster time? logic tells me that i would. what's everyone's experience on switching to the non-f sport pads? are they eatting up your rotors?
