it just gives it a little "shade" 50% is not much as far as tints go. the dark stuff you see on backs of SUV's must be around 5-10%
to me it does not inhibit night or wet driving at all....again, its more to knock down the glare/protect the inside/keep it cooler in summer

its visible-- and the backs only appear a bit darker it you really look for it.
its definitely NOT "blacked out" (can see all the way thru both sides)

This CL member tested the side windows and determined they were 70% from the factory. Dealer told him 90%. I had darker tint done on my car and didn't even realize factory tint was there (obviously didnt look very closely).

Most, if not all automotive grade glass for the past couple decades or so is factory "tinted". It's not "tint" film that you'd notice, it's baked into the glass. it's usually about 70% transmission with the windshield (IIRC) about 5% transmission.
Simply roll your side window down and look at it compared to the outside. it's usually darker.

Wondering if anyone has the IR window tint that blocks infrared heat (not UV tint). Anyone had it through summer? It's a little pricier than regular UV window tint, but does not let Infrared heat pass through. Tinting the whole car for $350 vs $600. They can do the whole front windshield for $150 with clear.
I have the suntek CIR (ceramic IR), you can definitely tell the difference from normal tint. I did not do the tint in my windshield because of the lane assist, but have done it on previous car, you can feel the difference when touching the dash.
I do, I had Llumar ceramic IR tint installed and I had 3m ceramic IR tint on my previous IS and I could tell a difference if the car was parked inside and then taken out on a hot summer day, but I couldn't tell at all if the car had been parked in the sun unattended for a period of time on a summer day if that makes sense. I made sure to get the ceramic IR tint again only because of how it does reduce the amount or intensity that I have to use a/c during the hotter months.
edit: with the 3m film I did tint the windshield but I decided not to with the Llumar film because they simply wanted too much and usually when I'm parked I use a sun reflector. That might change, however, as summer nears. I might wind bringing it back to the shop to have the windshield tinted telling them to avoid the area that is involved with the radar sensing and lane-keep assist.

Living in Texas heat I've always tinted windows on all my cars, but this time, with the Lexus, I went for the more expensive CIR and there is definitely a difference in cabin temps compared to other vehicles with just regular dark tint.
Is the $600 price you were quoted for them to remove current tint, then install IR tint? If I am remembering right. I was charged $240 for the removal of the OEM tint, plus $300 for the Suntek CIR installed (=$540).

I did my own tint on my car for $30 using 3M tint. just throwing that out there. And I paid $30 for materials just cause I was lazy and had it laser pre cut. The actual tint cost half that to do any modern car. $10-15. The tint on these jobs cost pennies.. you are all paying hundreds upon hundreds for labor.

I'm not gonna knock budget options, but to me, with certain things ... top of the line materials, my time has value and my skill vs a pro, and a warranty if it ever bubbles, peels, or any problems it's replaced for free has value to me. Yeah it's expensive, but if I wanted to be budget with everything I would have bought a civic or corolla.
I am totally with you on a lot of your posts with people wanting to spend serious money on very little gain or function not being the best financially responsible choice, but I'm also not against giving a nice car the treatment it deserves, piece of mind with warranty and perfect pro install has value to me.
I do all my own maintenance and work on my car, I'm very much a diy guy, but with the tint, and suspension, I went to a pro as my time was worth more than the price to have it done and the piece of mind with it had value.
Just my personal opinion of course.

You mean we are paying for labor & warranty on the install & ceramic IR tint vs DIY hours and non CIR tint.

If you have lane keep assist or radar detector, etc, the installer can cutout a window in the film. I'd do the windshield in TX especially if you're keeping the car for years. It'll save the interior as well as reduce heat buildup.
