Mrraider: As others have said, our cars do not use ZF transmissions.
This is how the ZF 8-speed (roughly) works: ZF has what they call an 8-speed kit. It's the guts -- a collection of gears, shafts, electronics, etc., and they have a few different varieties depending on the power the transmission should handle. If a manufacturer wants an 8-speed from ZF, they design a new case to bolt up to that engine, pick the correct 8-speed guts, and dump them into the case. Then the programming is written or tailored by the manufacturer for shift feel and for the shift logic to match the "character" of the engine.
These kits can be adapted for RWD or FWD applications, but it doesn't mean that any of these ZF transmissions are "the same." You're not going to take the ZF 8-speed from the Grand Cherokee and bolt it into a BMW 3-series, for example.
The 8-speed possibly doesnt fit in the AWD models because the nature of Toyota's particular AWD system makes space around the transmission tight.
