Phone/Messaging Integration Settings
For the iPhone...
Go to Settings.
Then Bluetooth.
Next to 'LEXUS IS', there's a blue 'i'. Click it.
Turn on 'Show Notifications'
For Androids....
It asks to enable MAP (messaging access profile) when you initial set up the phone to the vehicle. If you didn't do this the first time. Remove the phone, and add it again. Just pay special attention for pop ups on the phone while pairing.
That's it. Be sure to do this before getting into the vehicle, otherwise you will have to turn the car off then back on. Hope this helps.
i'm using the note 3 on 4.3
sms always worked as soon as i paired my phone with the 3IS
however, i never got my emails to work.
the settings on the car always had email notifications on
are you guys able to receive email notifications?
or just sms only?

I checked everywhere and couldn't see that FTP option that you mentioned... Is it on the phone bluetooth setting or on the car?
I have the same problem.
Same for me text worked day one from pairing my phone. Emails access from what i have seen on the net is very specific to certain phone. Neither the native Google mail nor the third party app i use for my work mail sync up to the car. But i have an Android phone, Motorola RAZR MAXX HD
I just got my new 2014 IS 250 and my text doesn't work... I checked everything and it seems to be enabled... right after I paired , on the phone it asked if I allow Lexus to access my messages, I click yes... but it doesn't work...

I had to enable FTP through the phone bluetooth settings, but i think on the car there was only option to enable MAP.
I have the HTC one, but i think all newer phones should have the same protocols, so hopefully you can find it.
