Thanks SW10ES, that's what we will be looking into. I thought about buying a car temporary and sell it in a few months, but I'll lose money with its depreciation, plus the hassle of buying and selling twice... it's not worth it.
I'll stick with the IS, and see whether we want to wait or pay extra $ to get it this summer.

Cheers!

Yeah that just doesn't make sense. People get all caught up in trying to get the "best deal" and wind up making it much more stressful for themselves, and wind up doing without the car that they want for a period of time.

Its a luxury car, by its very definition not a necessity purchase, you should get it when you need it and want it to surprise your wife, and just negotiate the best deal you can at the time and be happy IMHO.

That's easy to say if money is no object. But for 95% of us, money is always an object.
Waiting a few months or half a year could yield a savings of thousands over the term of a loan.

Sure, money is always an object. Its a question of what is more important, saving as much money as possible, or having the vehicle you want when you want/need it?

If you wanted to save as much money as possible you should be buying these cars used anyways.

At most you're talking about $2,000 within the first year. The spread between MSRP and invoice is maybe $4k. This car is going to remain popular. Is a saving os $2,000 on a $45,000 car worth waiting 6+ months, doing without a car when you need one, or buying some beater car to drive for a while and then selling it? Not to me. If $2k is that vital, I'd say a $45k car isn't a purchase you should be making.

will a dealer let you custom order a new IS,or do they look around for a close match within your area? I know American cars can be custom built to your specs, but foreign cars?

Lexus really doesn't like to do custom orders, but they will. Takes time.
