Hey guys, long time lurker and this forum has helped me keep my '14 350 running over 155K miles, and i plan to keep it a bit longer, until i can upgrade to a 500. So i have had the dreaded P0456 code that means a vacuum leak in the emission system. The lines in the front are good and tight, no cracks and i have already replaced the vacuum switch, going for the cheap and easy parts first. After three weeks the Check engine light turned on again. So i have to conclude that it may well be the Charcoal canister. I do get a strong gas smell when I Top Off the fuel, so i believe this may be the culprit and it may be done. My question is, if i jump on this job, will the canister be the likely cuplrit and any tips and general location of the canister? any tips and tricks? i'm a pretty great mechanic, just want to know what to expect! and yes, i will not be topping it off anymore. Other than this the car has been stupid reliable!
So i tackled on the project, it was actually super easy and i know I have an appreciation for how easy a Lexus is to work on. This is for a 2014 and up, IS 350 F sport- RWD
Note: the Charcoal canister is between located between the exhaust mufflers, behind the rear diff, underneath the car, inside of a skid plate. really easy to get to, really easy job.
step 1: safety glasses, safety first. lift up the rear, put it on a lift or get some ramps, I used ramps
step 2: remove skid plates, 5 plastic bolts, 4 push screws on the rear, you will need a 10mm and a 12mm socket. Normally this wont be a problem, but i personally have a tow hitch on my car, so i have to be flexible.
Step 3: the whole canister is exposed and all of the connections are easy to get to. Start by prying gently all of the electrical harnesses from around the canister. When you get to the two Fuel lines, squeeze the green tabs, pull them down so they are not engaged and GENTLY start pulling wiggling the hoses (no need for any tool, they're easy to get to). There is 1 vent line, two gas hoses and 1 electrical connector (nothing comes out but wear eye protection and move head away from path of dripping and close mouth just in case).
step 4: remove canister. 3 metal mount bolts and 1 plastic . size 12mm
more than enough clearance to do what you gotta do remove this skid plate, underneath the trunk, between mufflers and behind the rear Diff. There will be many rocks Behold in all its glory.
installation: reverse order. make sure connections are on and tight, don't need to smoke on bolts.
Overall it was a stupid easy job for anyone mechanically inclined. Took me about an hour, and thats me bull****ting with my neighbor. if you're not comfortable doing mechanic stuff, take it to a mechanic, don't risk messing something up. Show some humility. Thank you!
