Car was new in April, now with 2000 miles. Tonight, I noticed this brownish-orange liquid around one terminal. The other seems damp. Google search didn't talk about anything brown. Possible acid leak? Engine has never seen water.
Thanks for opinions...
Looks like corrosion prevention grease. Check under the ‘+’ terminal cap, it’s probably the same. The stuff never dries, so it can keep a good coating on the connection.
kj07xk is right - for new cars, it's the corrosion prevention grease they apply to the battery terminal posts. If it were actually leaking or true corrosion, you'd see either a white, blue or greenish color buildup around the posts.
Excellent info, thank you both. What is strange is I was under the hood two weeks ago cleaning everything and I honestly did not see any such material there. In fact, I cleaned dust off the top of the battery, making it all look good. Then two weeks later, I see the brown stuff. Is there a chance it got "activated" by either sitting, exposed to heat in the sun, or? Kinda stumped as to why it didn't appear until all of a sudden. I did have the front of the car PPF-ed in between these times, could anything they did with the hood up effect something?
