Hey first post, just wanted to share some pictures of my flocked dash and help anyone who had any questions, my dash was originally replaced and started cracking and getting sticky again, aswell as cracks and chipping on corners.
Looks very nice! Do you have any diy write up? I have two cracks and deciding between covering vs buying a new one.
Thanks! As far as step by step I didn't take many photos, but Asfar as replacing the dash goes new ones are expensive (if you can find a new one) and all the used ones I can find around me are in just as bad condition maybe a bit better but not worth the cost and time, I looked into wrapping the dash with Alcantara/suade with no luck finding a suitable fabric that was UV resistant, and has the stretch required, the flocking kit cost me 45$ (cad) picked it up at Lee Valley. It was definitely the best option as far as cost to finish quality as and ease of install. As far as the process..
1) Remove the dash, was very easy definitely recommend dropping the steering column (14mm nuts X 4) the whole interior can be taken apart with a Philips skrew driver, and 10mm socket, and the 14mm mentioned above.
2) After dash was removed I took all the vents and other trim pieces off the dash aswell as the airbag. (Disconnect battery before unplugging any airbags)
3) I would definitely do this part different so I'll share what I did then some tips. I wiped the dash down with some mineral spirit, followed by a scrub with a scotch bright pad, (the green one used for dishes lol) then followed by many heavy even coats of adhesion promoter.
My dash board wasn't at the point of being wet and Gooey like I've seen some peoples just tacky and soft, so depending on level of sticky ness you may need to use other products to prepare your dash, my biggest issue was with the chipping crumbling edges around the radio and centre vent. If I where to do it again I would use some acetone instead and do a coat of sealer.
3) after dash is cleaned, and prepped I used a small roller and applied the uncoat adhesive that came with the kit. Definitely apply Liberaly it is self leveling. Your working time is 15 min and the flock goes on quick so take your time and ensure a even coat, touch up with a brush.
4) after undercoat adhesive is applied load up the tube and flock away nice and Heavy, id recommend 2 bags of material as we almost ran out.
5) wait 15hours and blow off remaining fibres and reinstall!
Bonus tip, after reconnecting the battery reset the windows, and preform a throttle learn (may not be required for you but I needed to do this)
This is great. I'm in Canada too and will check out Lee Valley.
Yeah surprisingly they where the only place that had it locally, it was like 50$ after tax and another bag of flocking fibres is 20.50$ we got away with one but if you plan on doing anything else a second bag is definitely worth it, granted half of the flock ended up in the floor a second bag would be a good idea. I experimented with spraying the adhesive with a hvlp spray gun and it worked well after being thinned with mineral spirit, (the manual included goes into more detail) although id probably stick with roller as it would prevent the inside of the dash getting covered in adhesive, if you decide to go ahead with the flocking and want a hand or advice just lmk
Question, is the applied adhesive and flock rated to 160F (60°C) and UV? Interior car temps can get pretty high with windows up.
GL hope it lasts a long long time.
After looking into it more I realize now that the nylon fibers are better rated for UV and fading, I unfortunately went with the rayon as thats all they had. I will update yall if it fades in the future.
Okay this is embarrassing I've been a die hard blue guy for a long time and never knew that's what the logo was.... Face palm
haha! the piano guys who also did a lot of design work for Toyota! By chance I also have several of their audio receivers! They sound pretty darn good!
Looks great man! Looking to do the same but a bit worried about the passenger airbag, will it still deploy properly?
thanks man, I actually sold the car about a year ago but I can’t imagine it would have any issues deploying, the flock is actually pretty thin so I can’t see it causing issues.
