the first shop could not figuere it out, they drove the car, looked in and out and could not tell where exactly the noise was coming from or what was causing it since the car was running perfect and no codes.
took it to another shop, this time they spent 2 days with the car, had all 4 mechanics in there shop look at the car in every which angle, and also could not figuere it out, they mentioned that maybe something was loose within the interior since i just had the recall done and to check with lexus.
finally gave in and took it to lexus, after about 3 days get a call from the head mechanic there and he tells me that he is almost 99% sure the noise is from the fuel pump and or housing, that it will cost a bit more as far as the diagnostic charge to get in there and check, but he says you can feel the fuel lines shaking when u accelerate and can clearly hear the noise is resonating from the fuel pump.
Now, the one thing that lexus and 2 of the 3 other shops agreed on is that its NOT the timing chain. Which to me is a huge relief as that job was 2-3 grand.
Lexus is going to send me a estimate later today and let me know how much they will charge me for the job, which of course im not going to do with them i will just take it somewhere else. But i look in rock auto and see they have 2 fuel pumps, one is like 1000 dollars and another is 180.... this car uses 2 pumps, or am i looking at something wrong? Anybody know how hard this job is labor wise at a mechanic shop?
The High Pressure Fuel Pump is on Bank 1. Facing the car left hand side. Right next to the throttle body Right. That's the location of the HPFP. This one is the expensive one on RockAuto.Originally Posted by Frank1984

The second is the in tank fuel pump. It's located on driver rear side back seat. It's incased in a whole module. Pop it out, and disassemble to remove the fuel pump.

interesting thread....
well i havent heard back from lexus yet on the estimate, was waiting for it to know which fuel pump he was talking about, it seems to me that i might have dodged a bullet but caught another one if its the "high pressure fuel pump" as the cost of that with labor is going to be not to short of what replacing the timing chain would be.

Do you code have a code scanner that will show you live parameters.
If you can get access to one with the car on a level surface out of the wind engine off read the maf sensor grams of air. It should be 0.52 or a little more. I am a Lexus tech in florida btw

After that check has been confirmed then we move onto voltages of the throttle body sensor at various rpm's, then swirl control valve needs to be checked if both the first 2 checks have successfully passed. Also there is a relearn process for the throttle plate I'm guessing you didn't do after cleaning it

i did the relearn process after doing the cleaning, it was not right after but i did do it once i found out it needed to be done. and wouldt lexus have checked all that? if not should i ask them to do so?
right now the car is still at lexus, and it looks like i might have gotten lucky and its the fuel pump in the gas tank, here is the exact verbage they gave me in the estimate they emailed me...
CUSTOMER STATES THERE IS A RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE DASH ON ACCELERATION AFTER THE DASH WAS REPLACED ++++++ SEE D.S. PLEASE CHECK AND ADVISE
INSPECTED AND FOUND RATTLE/HUMMING SOUND TO BE COMING FROM WITHIN THE FUEL TANK AREA WHERE THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED. SOUND IS RESONATING FROM THE FUEL PUMP HOUSING ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE FUEL LINE GOING TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE BAY. RECOMMEND TIME TO REMOVE FUEL PUMP FOR INSPECTION.
they went on to the part (77020-53084) $640.00 and labor 175, total 923. So my question now is, which one to get from rockauto, they have 3, one for 183, one for 200 and another for 800

Have you ever had a problem where after filling up the needle stayed where it was for a little while like a 1 mile or 2
I spoke with the mechanic at lexus again, and asked him if it would be wise to go further into the diagnostic, he told me he was not 95% sure he was 99% sure it was the fuel pump, he told me he wishes i was there so he can show me, but he could take the rear seat out and grab on to the fuel lines from the fuel pump and you can clearly feel the vibrations coming thru them when u accelerate the car.
I spoke to one of the other shops that tried to diagnose the car and could not find the issue, they were the one that after 2 days thought the best bet was something loose in the dashboard from when they did the recall, as the noise was more evident inside the car then outside the car, because they could not find anything wrong with the car, i told them what lexus said and they too are skeptical this is the issue but they will take a look anyways.
The lexus tech seemed very confident, i spoke to him several times.
And as far as the needle staying in one line after putting fuel, no thats never happened to me. I fuel up and when i start it it immediately adjust accordingly.

for those who might run into this while on a search, it was the fuel pump (gas tank one) was replaced car is back to normal.
