guys ive read the post on the TSB for pulling the groment above the transmission. i cannot get my hand up there, dont see how anyone could. as is usually the case I JUST want a dame schematic on the system! i want to see where the lines go! i saw one guy talking about under the passenger side wheel well where the battery tray drainage line is, but im not seeing it. where is it SUPPOSED to be draining at? all the reading ive done and i dont see anyone first finding the line and seeing if its obstructed or to blow air in it before going right for the grommet pull.

 

Its on the driver side of the car it should be directly about the transmission fill plug. If its RWD remove the cover to access the fill plug. On the AWD there is no cover. I'm in the process of removing mine right now. I'm able to stick my hand up and feel it.

 

ive got the AWD. ill give it a try again today, ive got a bore scope camera today as well. but i dont see my fat hand getting up in there. thanks again mike. so i thought at first this was just a fix, but this is actually where its supposed to drain and it gets clogged for whatever reason so you just pull the grommet all together?

 

My arm barely fits up there, but I'm looking to make a makeshift hook. It seems the outer flange is encased in rubber lining. If you can stick your hand up above the fill plug you can feel its profile. I just can't grasp it to pull it out.

 

thats funny we are doing this at the same time. all videos ive watched people have used a hook , similar to a leather working tool. i haven't gotten that far obviously.

 

It's possible IS and GS models have the drain grommet in the same spot... above the transmission

It should be the same. I managed to locate it on the AWD. Its in a rough spot. Now I removed the Y pipe support, and the bracket holding the transmission wire loom above that. Now the fun part is using something to pull it out.


This is above the trans fill plug. You have to reach up, and hug the trans to feel it on the trans tunnel. It's encased in foam as you can see making it a PITA to remove.

I have now broken arms after doing this! Below is the nub that's left after grommet removal. The key is to use a seal puller picks to latch in to the rubber flange. See picks below.

 

For anyone else doing this, I'd drop the rear trans mount (4 bolts) w jack under it and let settle on the heat shields. A little bit at the tail can make a big difference up in the tunnel.

Worked at trans shop for 6 years and that is how you get to the upper bell housing bolts. Let it settle. Its not going to fall out .

 

thanks mike! i was able to get mine out too...i used a borescope attached to a coat hanger...i also duck taped a pick onto a coat hanger and managed to pull it off. after a few minutes of the ac running the ground was soaking wet. thank god.
