I was changing the oil on my is350 last week and noticed heavy rust on the welds in various chassis areas. I've been under 50 year old cars and not seen rust this bad. I was wondering if other members had noticed this and what they thought. (I intend to clean, primer and paint these areas.)
I've seen some pics of 2IS undercarriages in pretty rough shape that are from up North. So yes, it is normal and yes you'll want to do something to put a stop to the existing rust and inhibit further growth.
There's really no way to stop it if you live up north, even here in the south you'll still get some rust (obviously not in the extreme amounts you'll see up north). Your best bet to slow it down is to go through a car wash with an underbody wash fairly often in the winter, especially after salting. I know more and more car washes are becoming enclosed/heated so they can stay open.

I live in the east coast and between the salt, rain and potholes, few things last. I had mine (2014 IS350 F Sport) undercoated at Zeibart in 2016, when I bought it. They wire-brushed off the rust, applied undercoat, and so far, <5% rust. Every year, for $39, I have them touch it up--well worth the "investment". At 10 years I will have spent <$1000 and it will be >95% rustproof, including inside the doors, wheel wells, trunk lid, etc.
