Default 07 is350 rear diff

Hi guys I’m new to club Lexus, my girlfriend and I recently bought an 07 Lexus is350 with 200 thousand Canadian km on it, 2 weeks later check engine light and check vsc light came on and the car was making a humming noise from 50km/h and above, we brought it to the mechanic and he said that the rear diff is the problem, we brought him a used read diff with 65k on it and he replaced it. We picked up the car today and the engine light and VSC light is still on and the humming noise is still there. The mechanic then went on to say he doesn’t know why the noise is still there but he thinks it could be both rear wheel bearings and he wants to replace both bearings and both sets of pads and rotors (which don’t need replacing). I’m having a really hard time believing either wheel bearings have to be replaced since the car has no other symptoms, no pulling, no vibration, even tire and rotor wear, no clunking, and the vehicles alignment is good. The car also isn’t throwing an ABS light which is common when wheel bearings go. Just looking for advice on if this mechanic is screwing with us or if it could be the wheel bearings?? Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

What is the engine code? Generally speaking, a differential cannot cause an engine or ABS/VSC DTC.

Sounds like your "mechanic" is just randomly guessing and it's coming out of your pocket. Find someone else.

I don’t have any codes, when we picked up the car today he didn’t explain why the engine light or vsc was on, and he didn’t even address it, didn’t explain what caused them to come on, what codes they were throwing or why the lights were still on after “fixing it”. I plan to find a new one, thanks!

Pretty much impossible to misdiagnose a differential failure. The sound they make, the vibes, the hum on or off the gas, then rack it and listen in the air.

Find a new misfit mechanic. Perhaps get the codes read and talk with him about why he failed so boldly.

Not to mention 99.9999% of all diff failures will be accompanied by metal in the oil.

ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS DRAIN THE OIL!
Unscrew a plug and say look at all that metal. But there wasn't any. He failed you and cost you money.

As Jeff said, rare to never is a CEL going to be set unless there is catastrophic failure whereby you will be walking. Even then I don't honestly know if it would trigger a CEL.

Hate to say this, but your "mechanic" hasn't got a clue. Find a new one!
