Default 2006 IS250 battery casing "sensor"?

Original battery is dying (I think) so brought it to a battery shop. The guy looks, strokes chin, and tells me he's reluctant to change it as he did not fancy removing the "sensor" connected to the side of the battery casing, as it might control, or reset something - recommended taking to a lexus dealer and pay the full whack!

Anybody know what that connection is... I think I read it described as 'positive leads' (in a thread I can't now find).

Anyway - since getting this feedback I looked up other solutions and will try the distilled water etc. but still will want to remove battery so want to be sure that the 'sensor' can be disconnected without damaging anything.....

I assume he's talking about the current and/or temperature sensor(s). They won't have issues with the ECU. Nothing special required when it cones to those.

It's an easy change.

AS Jeff said above its a temperature sensor.
Comes apart relatively easily ... a small screwdriver is handy to depress the release tab.
It has to be disconnected to lift up the battery cover.
Just re-connect it after new battery fit and all will be good.
If you get a new battery just ensure you get the right type with the posts on the correct face.
I assume your battery is on the rhs of the engine bay by the bulkhead, looking from the front of the car
In the UK it described as type 068 with the posts at the back edge. If you get a type 069 the posts will be at the front and the leads will be over-stretched to reconnect...not good!
Many UK owners opt for the Bosch S4 026 068 because they are very good batteries and can be obtained at very good prices. I have one myself and it fits perfectly.

Hope that helps.

IS models outside of North America have a computer controlled charging system. The ECU monitors battery temperature and current flow and alters the charging output of the alternator to maximize charging efficiency (and therefore fuel efficiency).

Thanks all - great advice. My battery supplier (a business that does nothing other than supply & fit batteries) couldn't tell me what the sensor was for!! Before changing it I've topped up the distilled water levels which hadn't been done in a very long time, if ever, so I'll see if that gets it working a bit more reliably....

So you say you've got a 2006 2IS and are running on your OE battery still? If so, it is time for a new one!

Quite right (some say that about the car too)

Replaced battery this morning. For anybody this side of the poond.. Halfords did it for less than half the price of the Lexus dealer, and give a year's more warranty.

can I ask what battery exactly was it that Halfords fitted for you as the IS 250 battery is not usually on the shelf and they fit the next best fit!
see here https://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/fo...ery-for-is250/

I ended up getting a Bosch S4 026 ( which most parts sellers sites states will Not fit!)

Their own brand HB030. (not certain but they may be made by Varta).

Fitted perfectly, and comes with 3 year warranty (Lexus only giving 2), so, seems like a good deal to me!

i have just fitted a Bosch S4 026 (068) this morning - the battery cover on the Lexus, that houses the sensor, covers the twin handles on this Bosch battery - so the battery has to be positioned first, then the cover fitted over the top (e.g. the cover can’t be fitted onto the battery before positioning - this makes it very tricky to reconnect the sensor.
