Default High Mileage Oil

Are people running high mileage oil?

How many miles does a car need to have to warrant using a high mileage oil??

I don't because I buy my oil in bulk and the high milage isn't available at Costco. I believe the oil companies market high milage as 100k or more. Don't hold me to it.

Just wondering if anyone is running it on an older IS that maybe switched during the lifetime of the vehicle as the miles went up..

I run Mobil 1 Synthetic and I always see that they have the High Mileage as well so I was just curious

Got 130k on my 08. Still using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, not really considered a HM oil. If you are not leaking or burning an oil, I wouldn't really worry about using a HM oil.

Default Valvoline MaxLife is pretty much the gold standard on BITOG

Mobil One makes some strong HM oil as does Castrol.

Right now I'm running Pennzoil Platinum bc of a dirty engine and low NOACK

140k miles on my '06 IS350. Started burning oil just over one year ago.

I switched from whatever dealer was using to Mobil 1 high mileage. I was still adding 1 qt every 600-1000 miles.

I tried AMSOIL this last oil change. I have added 1 qt over ~2k miles.

I use Castrol GTX syn blend hi mileage 5W-30. I also have oil consumption but I just keep a quart in the trunk. As long as its not blowing smoke and passes smog I'll keep adding oil!

High mileage oils have conditioners in them to help keep rubber seals/gaskets supple and not turn to stone. They don't help with motors that already burn or consume oil. If you're not leaking oil, keep using non-high mileage oils to keep the additives out of the engine. Over many miles, these additives can gunk up and collect in unwanted places.

How’s pennzoil ultra treating you ? Because I’m thinking to switch from Amsoil to pennzoil ultra or mobile 1 ,, because after I switch from mobile 1 to Amsoil signature series I start notice white smoke comes from the tailpipe and smelly comes from the vent and horrible smelling ,, thinking of pennzoil ultra or mobile ?

thanks

Never had a problem with it. Sometimes I can burn a quart, sometimes I don't. I'm at 175k now. The hard part is getting it at the regular price ($24.97) since it's been going out of stock so often lately. Amazon/Walmart are the big sellers, and I suspect Amazon sources it from Walmart since when they go out of stock, Amazon goes out of stock. I usually run it for a slightly longer interval of 7500 miles.

I believe the "higher mileage" oils contain higher amount of zinc / ZDDP and Phosphorus than the non-high mileage oils. It assists at reducing wear of seals and gaskets.

HM or not, FULL synthetic is key, big difference with blend oil and change at most every 5k miles.

I think 90k+ is HM.

reviving a 2017 thread, lol
