Default Question for you audiophiles or quiet car fans

What does the inside of our doors look like, anyone? I'm asking because I'm thinking of adding more sound deadening, and was wondering what to buy. If the outer door skins are already dampened enough then I'll just skip that and go directly to the absorbing & blocking phase of the project. I thought this was a good question because assuming Lexus already sufficiently deadened the outer door skins is a pretty good assumption, no? And I can't find any decent pictures of our inner doors while disassembled. Thanks guys.

The outer door skins are not dampened in any form that I've seen.

Most car door skins have strategically positioned damping pads on the interior of the door but it may only be, say, a 9x6 piece - not anything larger. Bear in mind also, if you have a newer car, this will likely void the corrosion warranty.

My IS is pretty darn quiet!

My 2007 IS250 has no dampening on the outer skin. I added a layer of CLD to the outer skin. All you need is about 25% coverage. I covered my outer door skin with a little more than 25%, and the inner door skin as well. I will be adding CCF on top of the deadened inner skin, then MLV. I Also add CLD to the door card then CCF on top of that. The CCF is almost 100% coverage.

That's what I'm going to do as well.

Hey, how that we're on the topic of quietness, how quiet is your guys' engines? The one I just purchased (pick up in a few days) isn't the quietest, smoothest humming engine I've ever heard. It's an '11 is350 w/ 65,000 miles on her. I thought it would be as quiet as this 2016 fusion but the Fusion's way smoother & quieter. I wouldn't have guessed that.

I never sat in or drove a 350 but I considered my 250 engine to be on the quiet side. Sometimes at idle, I don't know that it's on.

My engine runs smooth however the direct injection is noisy. This is pretty much unavoidable as it is just a characteristic of direct injection setups.

Yes, the IS250 has a noticeable injector tick from the direct injection. I suspect the IS350 has different injectors as it has both direct and port injection. I'm surprised you think the IS350 is noisy(?!)

I see. Never thought of the injection pumps. Thanks!

Do you have and use all of the in-engine bay plastic covers?

The short period of time I heard the car run while sitting in it with quiet surroundings, all the plastic covers were on. The engine's "hum" if you will was smooth, but it was the slight "diesely" sound that confused me. This was no upper end tick like my subaru or other type of clicky sound. Sounded to me like a super slight muffled diesel. It was weird. Going to pick it up tomorrow and see what's up. How much difference do those 34 engine covers make in regards to sound deadening?

The "diesely" sound is the direct injection, it will be loudest at startup and at idle. The loudest of it will be from the pump which I can't recall if it is or isn't under the engine cover. I can't imagine the engine covers helping too much with the noise but I suppose any extra layer should do something to reduce the noise.

What I remember reading is that the noise comes from the mechanical high pressure fuel pump. Common now on DI motors.

The covers do help some, but not much. I run around with ONLY the engine cover because I prefer being able to see everything and access everything when I want to without removing a million clips! LOL
