Hi Clublexus,

my 06 is250 now has 155k miles. What is included in a tune up for our cars and is it a necessity to be done with no signs of a problem? I do not know anything about tune ups and have googled some things but I want to hear from you guys who seem to be experts on this too

Also, my buddy with an s2k told me how hes adjusted the valves several times in his VVT system as regular maintenance. Do our cars have a variable valve timing system and if so does it need adjusting every now and then?

I punched in the specs of your car to my local dealership appointment and it gave me this list.

Replace engine oil and oil filter
Replace air conditioner filter
Replace brake fluid
Replace engine air filter
Replace engine coolant (Super Long Life)
Wiper Insert Replacement (Front)
Clean air conditioner filter
Measure brake pad thickness and rotor runout
Measure thickness of brake rotors
Measure thickness of front brake pads and rotors
Re-torque axle shaft flange bolts
Reset maintenance reminder light
Road test vehicle
Inspect axle shaft boots
Inspect ball joints and dust covers
Inspect body
Inspect brake lines and hoses
Inspect drive belt(s)
Inspect exhaust pipes and mounting
Inspect fuel lines and connections, fuel tank band and fuel tank vapor vent system hoses.
Inspect fuel tank cap gasket
Inspect rack and pinion steering assembly
Inspect rear differential oil
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Visually inspect brake pads and rotors

There is no valve adjustment on the 2GR/4GR. The engines have hydraulic valve adjusters and the VVT-i system has no adjustments either.

"Tune-ups" used to reflect changing the plugs and points on a car and, possibly, adjusting the valves. Points no longer exist (unless you're driving a car from the '60s), valves are mostly hydraulic (no adjustment), and with iridium plugs, changes occur every 100,000 - 120,000 miles.

The other things on the list above are routing dealer maintenance activities (and will cost you a pretty penny at Lexus).
