If her car had strong gas-charged struts that could pop the lid open by itself, wouldn't the Harris Teeter folks still need to touch the trunk lid to close it?
I'd say there is a general lack of understanding, inability to educate those with a closed mind.
You could lick the trunk and no one will die from touching it. Coughing and/or being sneezed on is a different story if done in excess.
Generally speaking, I don't want/trust them to secure the contents, us there is the slamming the lid aspect.
I'm fine doing my own handling...

Actually you are right, but they do not close it either....or so they say...it's a bit of a cluster. But anyway, my question is answered, so thanks. There's zero logic in what people will or will not touch. And one person will close it, the next will not. Not a big deal quite frankly. I'm thinking gas powered struts on the trunk lid (or if you are in England, the boot) is a bit of overkill. Life is good regardless, I'm just happy they'll bring out the groceries !
Thanks for all the help though. I have never posted on this forum, so it's good to see others trying to help. Thank you, seriously.
I know I'm reviving a 1 month old revival of a 5 year old revival of a thread. Whatever. A $2 Harbor Freight bungee cord (32" from hook to hook) does the trick in my 2015 ES. IDK what the trunks are like in IS models. I tried different slots and different lengths of bungees, but this works perfectly. I'll try and post a video. I have to give credit to the link in post #2.
