It's really easy. Don't be intimidated. There are videos on YouTube especially Sewells video on swapping the flat bottom steering wheel. The hardest part In my opinion was carefully unplugging the airbag clips. The video doesn't really show you how to but it's possible.

^Yeah, and that I soon found out after a little research was quite easy too! Just lift up on the yellow inner portions of the connectors with a flat head screwdriver and pull up on the connector. Oh, I also needed a little persuasion removing my old wheel using a rubber mallet; yanking up on it just wasn't enough.

Hey all -

I am wanting to swap steering wheels with another one with new leather on it. My only concern is alignment.

I swapped steering wheels on my e46 as a cheaper way of having the steering wheel recovered. I just grabbed my 2IS today, and on the drive home (300 miles) I was really disappointed in the condition of the steering wheel. I assume the PO was a tad ring heavy.

That being said -- the BMW was kinda idiot proof. The steering wheel only went on one way, as the teeth on the steering wheel hub were lots of 90° angels except for the very bottom which was two 45° angels. Thus, you could only put the wheel on in one direction.

However, with an old Infiniti G of mine -- you could put the steering wheel on in any one of a few dozen different ways.

How is this car set up? I really really really really really don't want to have to play a guessing game as to how to get the steering wheel to line up perfectly, and greatly appreciate the BMW's idiot proof setup.

Does this 2IS have a similar setup to the BMW, or are there arrows, or how does this work?

^The 2IS steering column is a multi-point spline; so you have quite a few ways a wheel can be installed. But I think you're over-thinking it though, because as long as you center-up the wheels straight and don't clock the steering wheel during removal, you'll easily be able to install the new wheel straight without issue.
