Can the internals of a 2006 mirror fit into a 2009-2010 housing?

Has anyone ever tried this? Thanks in advance!

No, the upper part of the mirror casting is not drilled the same to
except the newer covers. The lower base is the same. I've been
down that road, hoping for an easy swap. so plan on an entire
mirror swap.
