Default Body shop ordered wrong headlights. Can they send it back?

So my car was in an accident where my driver side headlight tabs were broken and lens are beat up. My car is a 2011 Lexus IS350 F Sport and around a year ago, I took my 2011 Daytime running light (stripped edition) for the bubbling defect recall and got it replaced with a 2012. My body shop ordered 2011 headlights due to the sense that my car is 2011 so now I am driving around with a yellow strip (2011) and white strip (2012). Do you guys know if my body shop can send the headlight back to Lexus and get the correct one? I already took off the 2011 headlights to prevent scratches from road conditions.

Interesting questions, I would ask the shop.

might be one of those cases where they say your cars year is what I ordered. but if they are nice they should be able to make a swap. next time you should let them know. let us know how it goes.

Technically they've not done anything wrong; but if you're a calm, cool customer and can explain the situation to the body shop and even maybe show them the receipts from the dealership for when they replaced your headlamps with the 2012 models...you might just convince them to exchange them.

Yeah I am fully aware that I am at fault. I read somewhere before that Lexus do not make 2011 headlights and whenever you order new ones, they will always give you the most upgraded ones or something. The body shop linked to my sponsor so I am hoping they are nice enough to do it.. The headlights are basically brand new and wrapped away in enforced bubble wrap haha

You gotta stay on top of that stuff if you knew they were going to change it.

Is the difference in color that noticeable?

Honestly, I'm not sure I see why it's your fault. Why isn't it the body shop's obligation to check the parts they are ordering before they order them? Sure, it would have been easier if you pointed it out to them, but I think they have an obligation to verify part numbers, rather than just assume based on the year of the car. What if it were the wheels, and you swapped out one model year for a newer one--or even went after market? You wouldn't just throw up your hands and say "My bad", would you?

It's not even just the LED colour that's different, the headlight actually looks different before they're even on.

The original lights on a 2011 would have a flat black coating inside and a completely clear lens. The newer lights installed have a gloss black coating inside and diffuser ribs on the lens (affectionately referred to as "eyelashes" here on CL).

Any time an updated part is installed on a car you're going to need to be careful if that part is ever going to be replaced in the future. Obviously the body shop just gave the VIN to their Lexus dealership and they sent the light that originally came on the car. It's not wrong per se, but it is wrong for the car now that Lexus had installed newer headlights into the car. There is actually a note in the TSIB from Lexus stating that in the future if the headlights need to be replaced you'll need to order whatever is actually installed on the car and not what came on the car from the factory.

There are 5 versions of the headlights with the LED's. Externally, visually there are 3 versions of the headlights.

IS Sedan / IS C F-Sport part numbers (these are accurate as far as I know, but I haven't personally held all of these part numbers in my hands):

Prefix:
81145- (RH)
81185- (LH)

Suffix:
53540 - Original 2011 Design (Flat Black, Clear Lens)
53541 - Very Early 2012 Design (Gloss Black, Clear Lens)
53542 - Early 2012 Design (Gloss Black, Eyelash Lens)
53543 - 2012-2013 Design (Gloss Black, Eyelash Lens)
53544 - Newest TSB Design (Gloss Black, Eyelash Lens)

Visually the 53542, 53543 and 53544 are all the same, I believe any differences are in the type of materials used either in the coating or the lens.

So I had the lights replace a few months back and they put in 81185-53671 and 81145-53671, they have no eyelashes and still look like the piano black inside. Did they have different numbers for the convertables? Mine is a 2012 350C that came with eyelashes but not the gloss black

^ That's the early 2012 model, they changed the colour of the LED and the surroundings are glossy black but the paint directly above the LED's remains flat black.

Yes the IS F and IS C have different headlights than the IS Sedan (with the exception of the IS C F-Sport which uses the same headlights as the IS Sedan).

IS F / IS C (without F-Sport):

Prefix:
81145- (RH)
81185- (LH)

Suffix:

Thanks Jeff, so I guess I might have to worry about the lights bubbling again.
