i have 19" LFA style matte black color rims ... looks like dark grayish color...

my car is all blacked out...

would like to paint my rims black...

what kind of paint do u guys recommend...do I use spray paint...

what kind of paint goes on rims

A lot of people don't like it but you can plasti dip your rims black and it looks awesome.. its like a matte black finish.. I'm using my stock 17's as my winter rims and i'm thinking about plasti dipping them black as well.

 

You can also find some posts on other forums about people who have plastidip'd their rims black and then used the paint of their choice over top of the black. The pics I saw looked really good, but who knows what they will look like in person.

The advantage of doing it this way is that you can peel it off and start over if you don't like the look.

My IS350 came with the bright green plastidip on the rims. Wasn't fond of it but I lived with it about 3 weeks before I had the time to peel it off. There are still spots here and there but not that noticeable, I just haven't had the time to clean the rest up. Peeling it off and cleaning it up (so far) took 4-6 hours. Better than stripping paint and repainting though.

After searching for plasti dip, someone recommended this...

spray two coats of Plasti-Dip, two coats of Duplicolor Satin Black Wheel Coating, and two coats of Duplicolor Clear Wheel Coating

I'm going no to the dip. It may look okay in pictures (anything can look good in pictures) but in person its has a texture to it and doesn't look too great, especially after it starts to attract dirt/crap. To each his own though.

I would youtube videos on DIY wheel painting. Prep is key. Prepare to spend 3x prepping than you do actually painting.

 

Do not use spray paint or plastidip.

Get them professionally powder coated

 

I have seen a few IS250s for sale with the "Lobster Claw" wheels get repainted from gun metal grey to silver.

And they were the Truffle color.

I had mine powder coated, much better idea.

 

If sprayed on correctly, Plastidip actually doesn't have any texture to it.

 

I have used plasti dip on my previous car just to try the stuff out. It looks alright but I would not do it again, especially with the infamous brake dust coming from the IS. When brake dust is caked onto the rims it looks really horrible.

depends on your local pricing.. can cost anywhere from 100 to 200 a rim.. (to be fully stripped, prepped and powdercoated).. I plasti dipped my stock 17's black and they're perfect.. eventually i will have them powercoated but for now black plasti dip will work just fine..

for those wondering.. this process took a total of 5 hours.. 3 cans of plasti dip = $45

weigh your options.. 5 hours and $45 bucks.. or spend more money and have them powdercoated. to each his own.

I have a buddy that has plasti dipped rims and they have been that way for 2 years now.. right through Canadian winters and all. So don't tell me it won't last.
