Pothole protection... 225/35/19 versus 235/35/19
All,
I was wondering if the difference between 225/35 and 235/35 is significant enough to protect rims from potholes? I live in NYC and bought 225/35's but am having regrets thinking maybe I should have went with 235/35's.
225/35 = 79MM sidewall
235/35 = 83MM sidewall
Rougly a 4mm difference, not sure if this will help in pothole protection.
Thoughts on if this 4mm will make a drastic difference? or am i doomed for eternity
Thanks!

I live in queens and I was running 225/35/19 in the front last year. Personally I was always worrying about hitting potholes to the point where I decided to sell my setup and go back to 18's. I'm pretty OCD though lol. Lots of people run it without worries. I never had any issues, I was just always paranoid.

No problem I had the same drop with both my 19's and 18's and I can definitely say I liked the overall look better with 18s. I'm at 25 inches ground to fender, a two inch drop from stock AWD height. I felt the slight gap with the 19's was unsatisfying, however the slight gap with 18s is much more subtle. I think this also has to do with the fact that I have a small lip kit, the GFX rather than a bulkier one. If i could lower 1 more inch, the 19's would have looked great. Unfortunately we have an AWD model

Those size won't make any different to protect you from hitting pothole, I have 245-30-20 my rim still bent when hit a pothole, but wider tires would help you from scratch or nick your rims lips when everyday driving, I don't have any scratch on my rims lips but when I hit the pothole one of my rim's lip bent, but no scratch to the lip

What size wheel is the tire going on? The 235 width will help to protect the wheels/lip a bit more, but as for potholes and poor road surfaces, the 35 sidewall will feel the same/very close with both tires. One of our guys is running 225/35/19 tires on 19x8.5" wheels up front on his SC300, so it's stretched a little, but no issues after being on the car for almost 6 months now. Regardless, you'll have to be careful and avoid them the best you can. Keep the tires firm and a close eye on tire pressure, a harder tire will definitely help too.
