fog light retro plans

i bought an extra set of foglights and i have decided to do a retrofit. i have done one before but this time its a bit more involved as i am going to use the factory housing. i see people have used the bosch mini fogs which is 1.5" lens. i wanted something bigger possibly looking into a 2.5" so i can get a wider beam.
Any recommendations as to which ones to use i have heard people use the fx-r projectors but was seeing if there is anything better. i have philips hid kit in my halogen headlights and its not really cutting it for me.
i am also going to try to have the beam start from 80 -90 degrees from the front bumper as i need the extra width with my tint. so i can see whats around the corners.

Hondadna4 10-17-12 06:14 PM

Just did my fogs this week end. I went with the MH1 from the retrofit source I love them sooo much and I can see so much better now. Go big if you do a Bosch mini its not going to give you the full potential. I went with JVX IS250 fog light retrofit guide. Search the internet and you will find it. I love them I went with 4300k and I cant be happier.

rayac88 10-17-12 10:17 PM

anyone have a pic of how much cutting they had to do to put the fx-r into the fogs? i really prefer these as they have more width than the mh1
@hondadna do you have a pic or how wide the light goes from behind your car?

iNfectious 10-17-12 10:50 PM

^^^
http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/show...-USING-MINI-H1. That's a nice retrofit if you want more distant lighting. They are pretty wide IMO. If you want more width, angle the projectors outwards.

If you want FX-Rs, you need to check the measurements because the fog light housings have limited space.

I'm using Hella H3 projectors with 2" lens that are similar to the Bosch mini's. I added the yellow capsule for the yellow look because yellow bulbs and overlays aren't effective.

Here are some pics of my progress:

Remember the guide is for the 2010 and earlier cars. The 2011+ ones, it's different and more difficult to do and limited projector options because it uses a H11 fogs and there isn't much free room to play with because if the housing.

Since I have 2011, it was done a shop and the clearance was very tight. They managed to get the Morimoto Matchbox into them.

RDIS250AWD 10-18-12 01:24 AM

Man such a sweet mod. I gotta stop being lazy and get on this.

Hondadna4 10-18-12 06:25 AM

I cant get a good shot of the light out put with my Iphone4s. I can tell you the truth is see a **** ton better than with those crappy stock fogs as they dont do ANYTHING other than showing that you have fog lights. I would double check on the FX's with the dimension because the MH1 is a very tight squeeze I could only image with the FX as it is a full blown real headlight projector compared to the beginners MH1.

Hondadna4 10-18-12 08:07 AM

OLD shot with just the headlights on which is soooo horrible.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/c...r6/image-3.jpg
New shot with the fogs on it still dosent do it justice at all. The camera just plan sucks but I will tell you I no longer have to try hard to see at night. PLUS I have my whole windshield tinted 40%!!!

rayac88 10-19-12 09:42 AM

I need wider. i am always driving down dark roads with animals running out and sometimes people... But for those who have done a retro is it possible to angle the lens outward instead of straight forward?
I'm going to use an hid kit too... Not the Ebay style probably a d2s Phillips something like that so i can have the cleanest output.

es808 10-19-12 10:22 AM

I love this mod too but haven't tackled it yet. This is one mod that I'm unsure of in terms of what to use. Which is why I'm hesitating on getting it done. Plus I think I'll need an extra set of fogs just in case...:)

sm1ke 10-19-12 11:13 AM

This is also a future mod for me.. I did my own retrofit using MH1 projectors from TRS on my 99 Accord, really easy because there was no cutting or dremeling involved. I just had to open up the headlights, then seal them up afterwards.

I'd love to see how you accomplish this with the fx-r projectors, if you go that route. Subbed

rayac88 10-19-12 04:43 PM

i would open up my headlights and start measuing insides but i havent narrowed down which projectors to go with. those fx-r would be ideal but they are WIDE... i would have to fabricate something to keep them steady in the back housing, i know since its behind the bumper it doesnt have to look pretty but im too picky to have the back end looking a mess.
so far the largest lens size is 2" in the fogs?

iNfectious 10-19-12 08:09 PM

You can squeeze in a 2.5" lens. I just wanted a nice bezel around the projector so I opted for 2".

You can angle the projector because the reflector in the housing is off-centered and the front plastic lens on the fog lights is curved to the side:
reference from JVX
http://s59.photobucket.com/albums/g2.../DSC_4693h.jpg

The FX-R will be a challenge. A lot of custom work to make it fit onto such a small reflector and to keep the factory aiming.

rayac88 10-20-12 04:27 PM

my biggest worry with the fxr is the side where the lens meets the back housing if i measured correctly it will be sticking out the sides of the plastic casing close to the mounting tabs. the stock adjuster i could use still but might have to relocate it to another part of the back housing of the assembly.
i wish i had somewhere local to get some projectors. i'm going to keep researching to find a wide beam full size projectors. hopefully by the end of next week i will have some ordered. trying to get this done before thanksgiving.
i was hoping to fit the ls430 in our housing! yea right

PlacidBoi 10-20-12 04:41 PM

Aren't FXR projector Bi-Xenon's? Cuz that's what I have retro'ed in my headlights right now.

yes i believe so. i could incorporate it into but dont really care for the high beam feature. just want some thing different....
^^^ any pics of the light output from behind the car?

rayac88 10-21-12 08:37 AM

decided against the fxr. even though they are ideal they are too long. im still shopping around.... does anyone know if TRS gives discounts to people from different forums?

rayac88 10-24-12 10:18 PM

ordered d2s morimoto and philips bulbs. will update you guys on the project.

FOR YOUR FOGS!!! If so you think too big??? The reason why I picked the MH1 is because it has way better output than the D2S the only reason why I looked at the D2S was for OEM bulbs. The other issue I encounted was that the MH1 when adjusting it will touch the lense inside the holder. What I mean is Its long enough to adjust but to only a given amount. I hope those D2S are not longer because I think you will only have room to leave them in one place only. Send me a PM with all the detail of how its going and pics too. :D

im not worried about adjustment, i did some measurements and it i can mount the projectora little bit lower. i may have to take out the stock reflector all together but i will see when they come in. i really jst wanted to try something different. i would have used a different projector all together but they larger ones are too wide.
since i have philips bulbs in my headlights and i have been too spoiled to put aftermarket bulbs in this project. you can beat the neatness of the light output on oem IMO.

rayac88 10-25-12 09:28 AM

i am having issues getting the clip on the adjustment screw off so i can take the reflector out. any sugestions of how to take it out without breaking the black clip?

Hondadna4 10-25-12 10:04 AM

You must takke the reflector out by unscrewing it out all the way just keep on adjusting it and what will happen is there is two joint pieces that pop into black to pop those out there on the top of the reflector then keep unscrewing the adjustment knob and make sure its going outward and it will come out

Hondadna4 10-25-12 10:11 AM

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/c...r6/photo-8.jpg

Theses two knobs on the top of the reflector. I would suggest you TRIPLE CHECK on the car the retro fit because they will ALWAYS NEED adjusting ALWAYS so just be very careful and before you permentiley mount them. FX's are awesome I want to retro fit them in my headlights but IDK its either those or RX's

been doing that for hours. i can get the top one out no problem but the one on the adjustment knob doesnt go all the way out. i even tried prying the knob out the last bit. no luck

iNfectious 10-25-12 10:23 AM

Use a drill with a hex bit. Much faster.

rayac88 10-25-12 10:33 AM

got it i was trying to leave the clip on the back housing instead of on the reflector. i got it pop right out. now to just wait on the mailman today. then it will be me dremel and hurricane sandy.

Hondadna4 10-25-12 10:44 AM

heavy metals in your body will definitely make you sick. almost killed tony stark...:egads: lol. but i will be taking preparations, i will take pics as much as i can and post them up on the first page. i should be done in a week. assuming everything works the way i planned.

Hondadna4 10-25-12 11:23 AM

Retrofits never work as PLANNEDD !!! Dude get some heavy metal cutting discs from dremel your going to need the 5 pack the one with the quick release and just go crazy. I think that can keep some of the reflector bowl from the fog light. I think from there you can adjust a little

i did, it looked tiny. i want something with full output. this is going to be practice so i want a pretty hard retrofit. gives me an idea of what im working with.

01ES300NYC 10-26-12 08:54 PM

ok i hear that... well good luck.... i was gonna do mini h1's but after a lil research the output on the matchbooks is pretty good. I've already done 4 retro's on 3 different cars with with mini h1's . should only take me about an hour and a half to do my fogs with the matchbooks... but it looks like im gonna have to wait till Jan or Feb to do mine.... subscibed for updates and progress....

FlyRyde 10-28-12 09:25 AM

I'm looking for a set of used fogs to do the matchbox setup right now. I'll post pics :)

Did you need a relay harness for the MH1's?

01ES300NYC 10-31-12 04:45 PM

i didnt use one. i used a 35w pnp hid kit. only thing was i needed an h7 kit with h1 bulbs for the mini h1s.(on the 01 es)

rayac88 11-02-12 08:44 PM

finally got some pics

i got some work done. nothing final i ended up not ended up not wanting to use the existing reflector. the screws are temporary until i figure a real way to mount it and still have adjustment.
i also evened out the cutoff so its flat i dont care about glaring oncoming traffic as the fogs are low on my car anyway.

I dont know why you didn't want to use the reflector. I have tweaked my fogs lights about a dozen time to the output I wanted to do. Now I am starting the FX's on the stock HID on the IS next. Adjustment is key because the more I drive the more I see where they should be pointed at. I keep tweaking and the MH1's just keep getting better and better and better.

That's why i am trying to have it adjustable in four directions. I would have to cut the entire bulb holder on the reflector to fit it to use the adjustment knob
