Start with the easiest, have the tires balanced... it is perfectly normal for them to only shake at a certain speed. While they are being balanced, have them inspect the tires for any other potential issues...

I would say in the grand scheme of things, there is a 95% chance that is all it is... Other potentials include ball joints, control arm bushings, etc. Lets not go there until we have eliminated the most likely...

I had the same issue between 78-82 on mine. Got the tires re-balanced and no more issues.

Sorry to throw a wrench into the works, but it can also be a bent wheel. I had a similar steering wheel shake from 70-80, and it ended up being a bent driver's side rear wheel.

This is also possible but when he takes the wheels/tires to be balanced they should be able to let him know if they can't be balanced and its something more major.

^Well, a GOOD shop will tell you the wheel is damaged/bent...BUT will try to balance it out (if possible) anyways. I had Discount Tire do that to my bent wheel until I could procure a good used one (purchased on CL BTW ).

Are these brand new tires? It could be the one or more of the new tires is not true, as in the tire is not in spec (as in oval as opposed to round), which can make it do this at high speeds and should be replaced right away as its a defect.

Another could be the wheel bearing is worn out, therefore the wheel hub assembly would need to be replaced.
