I wouldn't do it, there's a reason he's selling it. I wouldn't buy then resale either, I'm pretty sure the person who owned it before would be mad at you for cutting you a deal then you make profit off of it.

Lol guys wow ......
well to be honest i been always a bmw fan, tho i do enjoy my lexus but still love them bimmers )
I know what a bmw costs to maintain my 530 was a lemon lol but the car was great until my head gasket blew and i did not want to deal with rebulding the whole vanos system.
as far as a mechanic goes, i have a bmw mechanic buddy that works on all my cars at any time.
He got 20k as a trade in offer at bmw for a new 750LI to lease. He has a trucking company, he wants to take the money he gets for the bmw and get another truck for his drivers and just lease a new car. That is why he is willing to give me that price, as far as the cars condition he took care of it religiously, and there are no current issues on the car.
The reason i been wondering is because the 350 is kind of a tight car and the 7 series has a higher value then my 350 even for resale. But like everyone says the only thing that is really stopping me from getting on it is all the freaking electronics that can fail and probably will at one point.

IS350 pros: Powerful acceleration, reliable
IS350 cons: "entry-level" luxury, not as prestigious, unusable back seats (except for small children or 2 small adults).
750Li pros: More seat room, more luxurious, more prestigious (the car will give people the deceptive impression that you're rich even if you're not)
750Li cons: "Boat"-like drive (not very sporty), expensive upkeep, unreliable, false prestige (the car will give people the deceptive impression that you're rich even though you're not)
The "prestige" factor is a double-edged sword in this case.
While I admire the 7 series (and S class, and LS), I personally would never buy one used because it just feels tacky to me. If I want to get into a 7 series, I'm going to buy it brand new. Otherwise I'd feel like I'm driving a car way beyond my pay grade/wealth, giving people the impression that I'm wealthy when I'm not.

And actually, there are many people who will see a 25 year old driving a recent BMW 7 series and think one of the following:
1) Oh his dad paid for his car
2) Oh, he bought it used and is driving it for the image
This really only applies to the "executive" luxury sedans like the 7, S, LS. The kind of person who drives a car like that is usually your 40-50 year old white collar $300k/year executive/lawyer/physician.
Again, I have nothing against BMW and I think it's a great car. I'd make the exact same points about a post 07 LS as well.
