It is an overkill to use Syntheic oil. The manufacturer recomends the oil to be chaged every 5K miles and you are throwing away money if you switch to synthetic. Oil filter cannot last for 10K

lolz..
It's only overkill if you don't value your engine. Synthetic oil is proven to be superior to conventional.
Hell.. I know it by a simple seat of the pants test. I've run both in my boat and I have to back off the gas to avoid redlining it with synthetic in there as things are just that much more slippery. It's all in how much you're willing to pay to treat your investment.

Also, the Toyota dealerships provide written information about doing 10k oil changes with synthetic oil. If Toyota will put it in writing - I believe it.

Sorry to bump a 4 year old thread, but I just had my 2011 IS 350 serviced and they used 0w-20. I quested them about it and they said we've been using 0w-20 in all our 350's for four years now. I mean on the online manual it still called for either 5w or 10w, and no mention of 0w for a 350. He was responding to me as if I were crazy, and it would be okay.
I bought the car 6 months ago and have already put on 15k miles, it's at 75k now and I want this car to last me a long time (milage wise). I do a lot of backroad commuting because I live out in the boonies.
Anyone know if he is right?

Right, so I should have them change it out from the 0w they installed to the 5w thats factory recommended, just not what the foreman thinks is okay?

for your is350 in particular, i recommend you to stay with 5-30 because is350 engine is different to is250, use always synthetic brand from Mobile 1 . i've drove Toyota Lexus over 15 years with Mobile engine oil .
PS: During "Vietnam War" my grandpa had a Toyota Pickup Truck bus Shuttle that he rides the Vietnam South Armies back- and ford-

is250 they used 0-20 winter and should use 5-30 in the summer, yours is is350 they should use 5-30 in the summer and 5-20 in the winter, i don't why they used 0-20 for your is350.

Thanks for the agreement! I also prefer Mobil 1 full synth, and would ideally use 5w-30 as recommended in the manual. Theses guys at the dealer are now trying to tell me that it calls for 5w-30 conventional, and if I asked for synth (which i probably did, as usual) that they would then use 0w-20. AFAIK it doesn't work like that, 5w is 5w is 5w, not 0w synth = 5w conv. I also confirmed with Lexus of America and other dealers, because these guys are resisting this, and continue to try and tell me the wrong information. "The lexus synth chart then says 0w for 350, not 5w" please correct me if I'm wrong.
Its ok and will be fine if your car is a brand new or low mileage but if your Engine is 120k miles + man i fear that will breaks your engine time after time when you drive the car,
unless recommended by Lexus Toyota Mechanic Engineer in person or paper work signed otherwise i won't listen to unofficial info from anyone or REP in the dealership.
And don't use conventional oil lol don't listen to those guys in an independant shop even friends, my mechanic friend always tells me every Engine oil is the same well F him !

0w is very thin for your is350, the reason they changed from 5w to 0w because IS engine has a cam shaft knocking problem, it's piston slaps, the 0w reduce that noise, you should keep in mind that thicker oil has better protection, ill probably try 10-30w next time for my IS250 as i always used for all my TOYOTA Solara V6 Engine summer only and go back to 5-30w in the winter.

To the OP, I still use the 5w30 in my 2006 is350, I do use mobile one full synthetic instead of conventional oil though... I'm sure the dealer finds it easier to just use the 0w20 when some one asks for synthetic, since the newer models use this oil, and they probably carry it in bulk. I think you will be fine using the 0w20 for this oil change, but I would go back to a 5w30 at the next interval.
