Hello dear Lexus Drivers,

I recently bought new IS 250 AWD 2012 and I skipped spoiler as dealer wanted big money for it. I bought spoiler myself on ebay and was thinking to install it using 3M tape only, but my dad says to drill it will be better.

If I drill wholes myself, will I loose a warranty on a car? Is is complicated to drill holes & install spoiler by myself?

Use tape. You'll be fine.

 

No you will not lose your factory paint warranty if you do drill the holes. The dealer drills the holes through the trunk lid when installing the spoiler - however they make use of a template to drill in the proper location. My suggestion would be to remove the bolts from the spoiler (without damaging the paint / finish) and install with only double-sided tape. That way you don't have to drill anything and the installation will be just about foolproof. Double-sided tape provides a sufficient bond to keep the spoiler adhered to your trunk. The bolts just deter theft, however, they can't even be seen once installed.

 

Its not easy to remove those bolts. Will need to use some brute force.

 

3M is more than enough!

 

I dremmel'd mine off. Took two minutes.

 

Just use 3M tape. Ive had my spoiler on the car for about 3-4 years now and never had a issue... a lot safer then drilling holes in your trunk not to mention with tape if you mess up you can always redo it unlike drilling holes once its drilled its drilled.

 

make sure you clean and wipe the surface with alcohol if you only use 3M tape

 

Don't bother drilling it, the red 3M double sided tape will hold fine. Just cover as much of the bottom of the spoiler as possible (dremel off the bolts on the spoiler) and you'll be good. Mine has held fine for over a year and a half now. No issues at all and it doesn't budge.

 

Use 3M's automotive acrylic plus attachment tape... NOT the molding tape. The tape itself is black in color.

Preparation is the key. Thoroughly clean the area with isopropyl alcohol or you you can buy 3M's prep pads. I recommend using 3M's adhesion promoter (they sell it in small packets... 2 is enough for both the car and spoiler's surface) prior to taping.

Have a friend or family member assist you in aligning it with your trunk. Apply even pressure and let it stay in the sun for a day

 

It also helps if the surface isn't cold when you install it. So let the trunk warm up a bit

 

My spoiler is still on for more than 5 years with only the 3m tape. Drilling is an option.

3m holds 5lbs per 3 inch or so.. that roll of loctite holds over 100lbs =)
