Default IS250 Cold engine start up noise

Hi, I have a new IS250 for 2 months. It's my first LEXUS. In winter time (temperature ~30 F), every morning when I start the car, the cold engine has a very loud noise. It usually lasts 5 seconds. The engine is very quite after it's warmed up. Does anyone else have the same problem? Is this normal for LEXUS cars? Thanks!

If you are hearing a clanking noise on cold start up it may be the TSB that most of us have. Take it to the dealer and if they can recreate the noise they should take care of it. Mine was doing the same and they fixed it. Its good now.

This thread scares me, this is not normal. Please try to take it to the dealership but not before getting it on tape, they might "not able to replicate noise" good luck.

Why is everyone saying this is normal? This is a textbook description of the cam gear TSIB. It is decidedly not normal, and there's a fix covered by powertrain warranty.

Go to the 2IS FAQ sticky thread and check the first link for the 2IS Buyer's Guide thread, I've explained the issue and given the info on the TSIB. Also, search the forum for the "engine grinding cranking start up" thread. Explains everything.

EDIT: Here are links:

Master cam gear TSIB thread: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...d-threads.html
2IS Buyer's Guide explanation:

- Cam Gear TSIB: the symptom is a grinding/cranking noise from the engine bay, usually right upon starting up the car. It's brief, only a second or two, but sounds like metal-on-metal grinding/cranking/rattling/knocking. It's more of a nuisance than anything else, as it usually does not pose a danger of damaging the car, but it's best to get it addressed if you encounter a car exhibiting this symptom. It afflicts almost every '06-'08 2IS at some point, and dealers should be familiar with the issue. It is covered by the 6 year/70k mile powertrain warranty as well as all Lexus extended warranties. It affects both the 250 and the 350; the TSIBs are L-SB-0156-08 for the IS350, and L-SB-0155-08 for the IS250. See this link for more information: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-s...d-threads.html

My personal opinion on the root of the issue is poor prolonged lubication of those cam gears. Mine only made the cold-start start-up "rattle" once for 1 second on one of the hottest summer afternoons this past summer.

^ thats all it takes for a real catastrophe down the road, dont prolong it. Especially if you will be out of powertrain warranty soon. However dealership will do EVERYTHING in their power to make sure they "cant replicate it" because is a $2000+ job and many hours.

I took mine in and left it there for 4 days... nothing.. took it home and it did it the first night. I am now trying to capture it on video and take it back.

Not normal if it's a loud ticking noise that quickly goes away once you start the motor. Sounds like the classic cam gear problem. Have it fixed under tsb.
The other noise on cold starts is a faint, weazy. ticking/tapping noise as you accelerate. It doesn't go away until the engine has had a chance to completely warm up. This is normal and from the direct injection of the 2.5 motor.

I took mine to the dealer and they already knew what I was talking about. They gave me a loaner and had it back for me the next day.

Take it to the dealer. I don't see why they shouldn't just it's most likely a TSB issue and give you a loner. if any thing just mention you found information about a TSB and you think it's related.
