Default 800mile-ish 2011 IS250 with tailpipe rust. Anyone else?

Just noticed this the other day and was wondering how concerned I should be. I think it looks really bad and I’m worried what it will look like in a few years let alone a few months. My decade old 2000 Honda S2000 has no sign of rust.

Is it a known issue do all the Lexus IS models do this? I was thinking that they went cheep on the part, it was not manufactured correctly and or a suppler did the old switcheroo. At any rate, just not feeling like I got what I paid for. This is the 4th car I’ve owned and I still have two of the first three with one being a 95 and I’ve never seen rust in the tailpipe on the others.

I have a 2010 IS250 with 12k miles and have never seen that before. Is it happening on both pipes?

On my 2011 IS250 I had a little bit on mine. Yet when I removed the OEM exhaust at about $1,000 miles, my wife and I were taking the exhaust inside and realized that about a gallon of water came out. We took the exhaust back outside and and put the exhaust up to drain all of the water out. There was tons and tons of rust colord water that was in the mufflers.

Put on an aftermarket exhaust and removed that about 200 miles ago. No water held in that exhaust. I now have a Greddy SE exhaust on the car and have no rust water that I know of.

If you go to the dealer, please post up what they say! Kinda curious. Not sure if the OEM exhaust is just holding water like a mo fo or what.

Looks like you take a lot of short trips. Condensation is common at start up and as the exhaust system heats up, it evaporates. You can sometimes see it pouring out of the car in front of you at traffic lights.

I drill a small (1/8") hole at the lowest point of my mufflers to let condensation out.

Hmm, I haven't noticed on mine but I'll be sure to double-check.

I don't think this is rust in the traditional sense. If you don't drive a lot or long distances, or if the weather is damp/humid or cold, this type of "juice" can build up inside the exhaust. I've seen this on many cars that have sat for a while. Wipe it off, drive a normal routine for a while, (where the car doesn't sit or is exposed to damp weather) and see if it comes back.

i bought my 2010 new and took at home at 50miles....i didn't have the rust at the end of the tip like you do which i think its just the water from the inside of the pipes coming out. just clean it really good. or you can take it back and complain. what i did have is the whole exhaust pipes from the axle was pretty well rusted for a 2010 with 50miles. when i took off the exhaust and tipped it standing up a huge amount of rusty water came out. i just then put on a exhaust and put the OEM away.

Yes, to the dealer but I just wanted to check here first. You never know what they will say or do.

It’s just happing on the right pipe but the left is dirty. Like that pic of the S2000, never cleaned them, the left and right both look fine. The IS250 one is dirty (black) in that spot and the other one is rusty. It just seemed like something was not right.

As far as shorts trips go, I do drive lots of short trips but it’s the same for my other cars and over the 10-15+ years I’ve never seen any rust.

The hole could work but are they really missing something that simple? Shouldn’t exhaust come with a hole if that much water in there is normal/possible? I’ve seen water dripping out of tailpipes of cars in traffic before but never thought much of it. Just thought something was wrong or out of tune.

Don’t want to replace it, I just got it and (unlike my neighbors) I don’t want to torture the neighbors.

I wonder why my exhaust had so much water in it as well. I mean a gallon may be an understatement. Water came pouring out when I removed mine.
