I disprove of this advice, because I followed it and it got me in trouble.
Of course I'm not recommending that you be financially irresponsible and max out your card month to month. I did bump the limit on my main credit card by $20k just to make sure my monthly ratio remained reasonble in lieu of mod spending, which helps your credit score. A lot of credit card companies allow yearly (or more frequent) credit limit bumps, so I'm just saying to take advantage of those early.
