Replacing CV Boots?

Default Replacing CV Boots?

So I noticed globs of what look like grease and gunk on my garage floor. I took the car to a local shop and had it on a lift. Mechanic tells me that both my front CV boots are pretty gone and need to be replaced. I've never dealt with that stuff any one have tips? Or just any general information about it.

Both front CV boots? Rarely do they both crap out at the same time. I would check into that, usually its just one that leaks.

Usually (not sure about the IS) its more efficient/cheaper to just replace the axle than fix the CV boot. For my old car it was like that too, cheaper to replace the axle. You can get Re-manufactured ones to save cost.

Yes! AWD AND on BCR coils. Any correlation??

^ Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but changing the ride height of your car induces more wear on other suspension parts and axle's from what I understand.

^That's what I've read...the coils (the drop really) with the AWD system seem to cause ALOT of issues. I'm guessing that the geometry when lowered causes this issue.

Have you started to hear slight clicking noises when turning at slow speeds? That sound would be your CV joints going out on you.

I would suggest replacing the axles altogether.

Ah YES! i have been hearing this knocks when turning. But i always thought that was something the coils since everyone hears clunks and knocks from the BCRs

You will not have issues with a RWD IS. The front axels on the AWD drive take a beating as they have to drive the front wheels and the boots get extended from all the left and right turning.

On a RWD you will not have this issue even is the car is lowered as the boots aren't under the same stress. Hell your diff will probably need to be rebuilt before your axels do.

The noise you would hear is a constant loud clicking sound when turning left and right. This is a very common problem on FWD cars.

Yeah, one of the members on here had his IS250 AWD sitting under 25 inches and had leaking problems with his CV boots. I'm lowered to about 25.4 inches and so far have had no problems.

wish i had just gotten the rwd ... so many problems with lowering the AWD... not that i'm having any lol.

ive been driving with it leaking for awhile now..Better start looking into replacements. And dont even talk about rebuilding a differential. That sounds expensive.

^ I would limit driving and get that fixed ASAP, don't want the CV boot to completely fail on you while your driving
