Hey guys,

In several threads about the OEM windshield, there is mention that Lexus uses some sort of film on the inner surface to act as a sound deadener - someone has reported that when a non-OEM windshield without this film was installed that they could immediately tell the difference in interior noise levels.

I was thinking of installing a film or window tint on the windshield for added heat rejection, but I am concerned that this may affect the acoustical performance of the windshield. Does anybody have any experience with putting film on the windshield and its effect on interior noise?

A window specifically made in a way to reduce outside noise is totally different from putting tint on your front window. Think about it..... how could tint change the way your car sounds? And no Lexus didn't do something as simple as put a film on the outside or inside of the window to make it reduce noise, its the way the glass is laminated, all windshields have a film on the inside sandwiched between the outer and inner glass.

Thanks for your replies guys. I'm aware that all automotive safety glass is laminated, but I wasn't sure if the acoustic layer was meant to prevent reflective noise as opposed to transmissive noise. What I found out is that people keep refering to the "acoustic layer" as if it's an additional layer to the normal two pieces of glass and PVB, where in reality it's the same PVB layer that's normally used to bond the two glass layers, just optimized for minimal acoustic transmission.
