Default Warning light / Check VSC?

I am working on a buddy's wife's car. He is not helping because he is in Afghanistan. Anyway...

I am getting the warning symbol in the center of the dash with the text "check VSC." I am also getting the P/S light in the bottom right corner. The car will not start. Do you have any suggestions? The nearest dealer is 90 miles away.

Do you have access to an OBD II scanner? That would give you the codes that are causing the problem.

Not to be a Debby-Downer, but that happened to my car last week. It turned out the timing chain hadn't been torqued to spec after the valve spring recall, and by engine shaved itself to death.

I hope that's not the case for you.

I was under the impression that I could read codes for the check engine light via the OBDII. I am getting the center triangle warning light. I will still try to read the codes and see what I get.

Hopefully she does not have a trashed engine.

Worth a shot at pulling a code off the OBDII port. I think it'll come down to your particular scanner on whether it can read it or not. Some can only read codes that throw specifically a CEL, some can read other codes.

And if she does have a trashed engine (as in Aaron's case), it would only be due to dealer negligence (not tightening the timing chain correctly during the recall) and it would be replaced free of charge, so I wouldn't worry much about that.

Happened to me too. They said that the seal around the gas cap was defective and let air in the gas tank. The dealer replaced the gas cap and reset it. Is it still under warranty?
