synthetic or not

Synthetic oil lasts much longer and doesnt break down as easily. it also doesnt leave any buildup. non-synthetic oil is just plain cheap. i cant believe the Lexus dealership even offers an oil change using non-synthetic oil

Not just offers, RECOMMENDS non-synthetic. My dealer flat out told me it's not worth the extra expense as long as you are getting the oil changed at the recommended intervals. Good enough for me.

My recommendation: if you choose to always go to the dealership at 5k miles, just stick with non-synthetic. If you choose to do 1 year changes with 10k+ miles, go with synthetic.
Money is money, no point in paying for a premium you would never get the benefit from.

Mobil 1 synthetic only for me at once 10K miles max intervals or once per year whatever comes first. My Lexus dealers stocks it and has no problems using it in my IS350.

Going Synth at 40k is probably just fine, however I seldom recommend switching to it above the 50 mark, and especially not if the car has been poorly maintained with infrequent oil changes prior to the switch. There are definite issues that can arise when changing to synth if you are not the original owner or lax on the regular oil change intervals.
As other have attested, synth is really not required for a normally aspirated engine, but if it makes you feel better, it certainly does no harm to trust it.
I'm old school in most things, and will continue to use standard oils changed regularly at 3000 mile intervals. That rule will never do you wrong.
For my turbo bikes and cars, where oil must function in a glowing turbo housing, I will run only Mobil1, and even there I travel no more that 3k change.

The interval matters more than the oil itself. Any API approved oil is good enough for your engine. Many are led to believe that if you're not running synthetic oil, your engine will not make it past 200k miles or some other nonsense. Properly maintained engine, whether it be with dino or synthetic, is the key. If you want to be sure, get a used oil analysis and see how good the wear is with conventional oil. I'm willing to bet engine wear will still be good, and that your car will die of other cause long before the engine wears itself out.
Also, many people run synthetic oil for longer intervals, but they neglect the fact that the filter needs to be changed too. One (popular) viable method is to change out your filter but don't drain the synthetic fluid. Simple replace the filter and then top off your engine oil. That way you get fresh filtration while making of the (still) good motor oil.
If your car sees more extreme conditions, then synthetic oil may be more appropriate.
