synthetic or not

Hi, i'm not due for an oil change for another 4k miles but was doing some research. My car has service history at Lexus through its 40k miles and dealer uses non-synthetic 5w30, ive always used synthetics in my other cars, what do you guys think, stay non-syn? Spoke to the dealer and he says these cars dont need synthetic and a reg oil change at the dealer is $49.95, that is damn cheap so should I jus stay with non-syn dealer oil changes for $49.95????? i have a 06 is350

I'm feel synthetic is good way for engine........But lexus dealer must use non-syn always...I'm choose change without dealer after 50000 Miles and I'm choose Syn-oil....

I've been doing Mobile 1 synthetic changes myself since I bought my car. I do it for convenience. 1. I dont have to bring it anywhere, and 2. I go 10,000 miles per change.

$49 isn't that cheap compared to most other shops....very easy to find $29.99 oil changes out there...and is about the same to do it yourself.

If you plan to keep bringing it to the dealer for changes, I'd probably stay non-synthetic. I can't remember the exact price, but dealers charge over $100 for a synthetic change...and I dont think they recommend 10k miles...doubling your mileage for doubling your expense.

Synthetic vs. Non synthetic will not be the downfall of your car. Anyway, how many of us are going to keep our cars until regular vs. synthetic lubrication is their demise?

If you go synthetic, do it for convenience.

agreed. As long as you change it every 5K, you can stay non-synthetic

some ppl feel they get better mileage on syn, but it is negligible...

I don't think the 2IS (or most other cars) needs synthetic oil, but because I've been told it's a higher quality oil, I prefer it to conventional oil and all my cars get Mobil 1 synthetic.

99slvr35th 04-05-11 10:19 AM

My other two cars use mobil one and castrol syntec per manufacture recommendatios,. These cars take 7quarts so i figure 35 for oil and filter - non synt and 15 to install, seems easier to let dealer do it but if i go synthetic I'll do it myself because dealer or indy shops are pretty expensive.
Hmmm, still not sure what to do ..lol

Lexitegra 04-05-11 10:28 AM

Well, if you want to stick with synthetic and would rather not do it yourself, can you purchase the synthetic oil and supply it to the dealer/lube shop to use in lieu of conventional oil?

99slvr35th 04-05-11 10:40 AM

I do tht now..lol i buy the oil and pay them either 15 or 20 to change, for tht price i rather pay.
Bmw runs $85 for oil and filter then 20 change, dealer want 250 :eek2:, cobra costs 55 for oil and filter and 20 to change , so 50 for an oil change at dealer is a steal but non-synth. Not sure how much a lex filter will cost but oil would be around 55 or so then filter then 20 to change. But since she'll be driving it for awhile i guess synthetic is the best route. I still change oil every 5k though. do you guys still do it at 5k with synthtic?

6.7qts 5W30 Valvoline SYN POWER!!!!!

Sango 04-05-11 11:49 AM

I use the AMSOIL 0W-30 and have the dealership put it in for me for my oil changes.

99slvr35th 04-05-11 12:15 PM

thats some lightweight oil sango. any specific reason why?

99slvr35th 04-05-11 12:40 PM

dealer wants $89.99 for synthetic oil change. I asked her what brand of synth oil and she said i would have to call back, she doesn't know, this is after waiting 5 minutes for her to just get the price. This alone scares me, and thats a service advisor :eek2:

This is pretty outrageous that owners of these expensive cars are considering going cheap on oil. Go synthetic all the way. I swear by it. You can definitely notice how silky smooth they run. We're talking a relatively negligible price difference every 3,5,10k miles (whatever interval you do) in exchange for a whole lot of piece of mind from synthetic.

The lighter weight works better for cold starts for the engine (as most stress and wear is done on the car during starting as it takes a few seconds to build oil pressure), not to mention the 0W does ensure it will work at lower starting temperature which would come when we get the colder climates as the oil will flow easier. The fuel economy did go up a bit.

As for per the 2011 vehicles, Lexus started recommending using 0W-20 for their cars.

Gville350 04-05-11 02:11 PM

Ah, the on-going oil debate. No matter the car/fourm, there will be one. LOL!

I've ran NA and boosted 4 bangers for years and have only ever used dino oil. I've always liked Castrol 5w-30 for my imports, which will probably be continued in my 2IS now.
